Recently Sarah Konecnsi, a Canadian composer, signed up with Editions Musica Ferrum.

The result of this collaboration was the first publication of her series of Fantasies on an Archaic Legend.

The score, as per usual in our case, has been handsomely illustrated by Polish artist Elwira Pawlikowska.

I'm linking the works page, where a youtube video can be found. Reason for that is that I think it's worth previewing the pages and checking out the text that accompanies the score, as well as one of the illustrations.

Looking forward for any comments. One thing that one may note straight away is that the recording (by the composer herself) is not following 100% the score (which is funny and could generate some interesting discussions with stores! grin)

Although this is a modernistic and pretty avant-gardistic composition it is quite appealing to listen to. Quite interesting to notice how the composer utilises the instrument. And I'm impressed by the fact that she is capable of making the composition so coherent in spite of the fact that she seems to use elements from lots of different musical styles.

It's exactly that that drew me to her work(s). She's using whatever techniques she might think, but the sound is SO appealing and approachable! It's not an avant-garde composition though...

Thank you Ganddalf the Grey (or White?)

Hi, Nikolas! For me, her piece is reminiscent of Judith Lang Zaimont's "Wizards -- Three Magic Masters". In both cases, the composers provide three distinct scenes based upon Myth and Legend, and they are both essentially lyrical and tonal in their thinking, restricting the "avant-garde" aspect to coloristic devices of various sorts and heavy use of the extreme registers of the keyboard. In both cases, I think these are immediately accessible "showpieces"; enjoyable to listen to at first blush. Thanks for sharing this!

I didn't know of Judith's works! Thank you for introducing me to her and her music.

Yes, they are showpieces, in essence, but if I was still a student, above a certain level, I'd love to have something like this to perform.
