Some people have very little to do with their time.

Agreed, as this looks like a deliberate attempt at getting attention. thumb

The Kissin recording is a perfect example of how not to play the music of the 19th century. That is why I made my video.

Here is a very poor Youtube rendering of what is probably Grunfeld's greatest recording. If you want to hear an excerpt of a much better version of this, then you can go to the second link (my video) and scroll to 7:08.

To the extent that this site is very much a public resource and a reference, I feel duty bound to make sure nobody takes that comment seriously. grin
Although it was meant as such.

Compared to the composer/transcriber's own recording, Kissin's performance is not in the same universe as what Alfred Grunfeld intended.

But, then again, you can make it up as you go along, just like Donald J. Grout. It is no big deal to use words like evolved.

As a former student of this "Modernist," you wrote that he lectured very differently than the style in which he performed (paraphrasing your words).

This is why one of the first chapters in Neal Peres Da Costa's book, "Off The Record," is entitled "Early Recordings As Evidence." Non-edited live recordings don't lie.

People lie.

Again for the sake of accuracy for the world at large, in this case the internet searchers who might be looking up "Donald Grout" and finding this canard (that's the very kind word).... ha

Grout didn't "lie," and he didn't preach other than what he practiced. I imagine Louis is referring to the, um, gross negligence of Grout's not including stuff like rolling of chords in his books. smile

Louis, either you've been unlucky enough to never have had a teacher or colleague who would level with you about how off-base you are on so many things, or you have a tin ear. I suspect more likely the latter.
