Is it possible that no one on PW realizes that today is the birthday of the great master? Or did I miss a posting on some other forum?

Your's is the only post I saw.

I'm not much into dates, etc. I usually remember when my own birthday is, and a few immediate family members.

Time to go play some Bach I guess.

Happy belated birthday to JS Bach !
There is reason to celebrate his birthday. His music is timeless.
I have enjoyed as much playing his keyboard music as listening to it.
I love the cantatas, the cello suites, the brandemburg concertos,..
Favorite recordings include WTC by Richter, Partitas by GlennGould, cello suites by Casals smile

I'm playing Bach, John--- if it makes you feel better. So in that way, to me, he is still alive. I loved his music from the first time I ever heard it, as a young teenager; so far, that impression has never let up.

I did overlook his birthday, through not booting up Outlook on that day. But interestingly, on that very day, I remembered the dream I had some years ago, in which he was transported through some unknown process from his time, into my music room in the present, in person.

Unlike many dreams, this one was fraught with practical problems which you can imagine. I can't say I think of it often, but it is still so vivid, and still stands out by being so coherent, unlike the chaotic and nonsensical mishmash of most dream images. It may be the principal impression; it would fit for a dream about a composer and teacher.

March 21 is Bach's birthday according to the reckoning of the old Julian Calendar. And today, March 31, is the same occasion according to the reckoning of the new Gregorian Calendar, implemented to correct the 'drift' of the seasons because of neglect of the quarter-day difference in the solar year and the 'year' figured in whole days of the planet's spin.

The accumulated error, over the centuries, came to ten days... which were skipped all at once in Catholic countries, by fiat of the Pope.

Bach is a great enough personage that I have no problem with celebrating his birthday twice in a year.

I can't believe nobody acknowledged Rachmaninoff's birthday yesterday.

"...I can't believe nobody acknowledged Rachmaninoff's birthday yesterday...."

In New Orleans, it seems that there are no end of parades--- large, small, and medium-sized, for happy occasions, sad, and for those of seemingly nondescript features. The year I lived there, it became just an astounding feature of daily life. (Church bells--- real ones, in bell towers, ring at frequent intervals each and every day of the world, too.)

Just because we don't have a parade every time a musician's birthday rolls around, it doesn't mean we have forgotten them. The stars shine in the sky every day; we don't publish a notice in the newspaper, though many people delight in their presence.

So far today, I haven't seen any parades mourning the death of Brahms. But don't worry, we still love him.

The truth is, there is only so much to be said. And if we expect to have time to practice, it may be best not to say even that.
