I thought Steinway Hall was landmarked. Today I walked by Steinway Hall the front doors were closed and the door knobs either fell off or were removed. There is a building next to it and I was able to see that the hall looked the same, but closed. Scaffolding surrounds Steinway Hall and other buildings next to it.

There is so much construction along 57th Street, I just hope that Steinway Hall remains as is and they build around it, maybe Steinway or whoever owns the building sold the air rights. Just hope that Steinway Hall will not come under the wrecking ball.

Does anyone know whats happening? frown

Steinway sold the hall about a year ago. It was much discussed here, and doubtless you'll find some of the many threads with a search.

"The buyer is an investment group that is a joint venture of JDS Development Group, the Property Markets Group and Atlantic Partners, according to Michael Stern, the managing partner of JDS Development.

He said the new owner did not intend to tear down Steinway Hall, which was designed by Warren & Wetmore, the same firm that is known for its work on Grand Central Terminal. As for what will happen to Steinway Hall, Mr. Stern said, “We’re not sure yet. We haven’t determined what our plans are for the property.”" [City Room; Blogging from the Boroughs]

The owner does not intend to tear down the building; that doesn't mean that, eventually, they won't.

It's not completely clear what they will be doing, but it's not being torn down, just "converted", which could mean many things. I read elsewhere that the main Rotunda showroom will be "preserved", but they didn't say for what use.

Thanks everyone, it's a sad sight to see Steinway Hall surrounded with scaffolding, the heavy doors shut, doorknobs off--- the building is landmarked and I read that the main floor is also. I hope that means the building stays along with the main floor. Time will tell.

Guess the sign of the times, the Rizzoli Book store is closing and the building it's in will be taken down.

Guess time will tell.

no matter how you spin it, it's still the destruction of a temple and that's never a good thing.

and no matter how you spin it, a temple in mt kisco is an exclusive temple.

The developers will most likely build yet another tall huge glass box dwarfing Steinway Hall.
