I'm working on a project, that has a lot to do with Beethoven. And came up with this idea, but it feels SO familiar, that I'm positive I've stolen it from another composer (probably long dead, so he won't mind, but still)...

Any ideas on what is this piece, please?

I'm not sure, but I want that played at my movie funeral.

If I'm alive and you can book tickets, I can probably fly over... :P

So it doesn't ring any bells? Why oh why did I come up with a catchy tune? grrrr...

I like it a lot. Indeed, I can see the movie funeral montage-black cars driving in the rain, mourners with umbrellas, in church, then graveside...

The mood of this piece reminds me a bit of Handel's Sarabande, but that might just be because of the sarabande rhythm and minor key, who knows.

Well, at first the c minor was combining with the block chords to give me a Rach 2 vibe but then something with the chord progression made it go Bach/Baroque on me, but then it kind of went classical.

So I just shrugged and decided to take it at face Requiem value. Or maybe sarabande.

Ok, but it's Fm and not Cm... :-/ I mean it's really THAT apart! grin teeheehe...

Guys, just to be clear: This is for a project inspired by Beethoven, which I plan to detune completely, by the time I'm threw (limit around 2 minutes!)... But I want to make sure that it's going that way and is not stolen or anything...

I do feel that it goes towards Chopin a tiny bit, but I'm totally deaf, to where it came from... :-/ The bad thing about improvising on the keyboard. You never know what's coming through!

Ha, ok.

I'm going to go ahead and guess, then, that the Rach 2 starts with an Fm despite being in cm.

I know I don't have perfect pitch, but that struck me instantly as the same darn chord. Not that it matters. I'm not exactly playing the Rach 2 anytime soon, heh.

Anyway, it does feel familiar, but I'm not getting the feeling it's something I've specifically heard before.

Other than that first chord. I'm no copyright lawyer, but I don't think it's plagiarism to use a chord someone else has used before. wink

And ok, I'm an idiot, because it does start in the Fm chord... :-/ Oh dear me...

There's absolutely no copyright issue to be involved, unless I've nicked this from someone who died less than 70 years ago (which I doubt)...

Whoopsy me...

No, I know it's not a copyright issue. I was just making a lawyer joke. And you're not the idiot, I am: it's my fault for not thinking that MAYBE the Rach 2 doesn't start in its nominal key. Anyway, it should have been a huge clue that it does a little cadence there as the orchestra comes in. It would make sense for it to resolve to c minor, not start there, ha.

That's why you're the composer and I'm not.

Well, what can you expect from a guy named Nikolas? You must have "nicked" that from somewhere!

Just kidding, just kidding. smile

(Also sorry for the English slang... Your English is far better than my Greek, but if you didn't already know, to nick something is to steal it.)

I knew that! (Really I did)...

Anyhow, any more takes please? (what a lovely pun, huh? "Take" as in "take for your own") grin teehee...

Don't worry, I don't mind anything.

Ha, I do not doubt you. Your ability to participate seamlessly in another language is something I have already noted and given great respect to.

I spend a significant amount of my time speaking a language that isn't my native one either so you can take the compliment from someone who knows.

Half the fun is getting good enough to use the slang, isn't it? smile

I love languages.

It reminds me of the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 7th symphony but just the main theme.

The Beethoven movement is a theme and variations where each variation builds by adding another layer over the main theme. Beethoven's theme doesn't have a dotted rhythm like yours but has a similar "feel" to it. As others have said it evokes a funeral march of some kind.

Ok! Here's my honest reply to Vid: WOW! It is close, but not too sure, but heck this movement, actually eluded me for a long time... I knew the sound, but not which work it was, so thanks for that!

Thank you everyone! I'm happy that so far there's no one to confirm my cheating... Not even myself!
