I've gone from some of the easier czerny etudes to the more difficult ones quite many years ago, then a few easy Liszt etudes (op. 1), the chopin op. 25 no. 2, then the op. 104 no. 1 etude by Mendelssohn, and right now, i'm working on, and have almost mastered the Chopin op. 10 no. 12, the revolutionary.
What would you think my teacher would consider next? i think she mentioned something about a paganini-liszt etude she wants me to play next schoolyear, on a competition this december, but i've heard that these are devilishly difficult, and i'm not sure if she really meant it. What do you think? should i play more chopin etudes, or maybe am i ready to move on to something more challenging? what would that be? Do you really think the Paganini-Liszt's are in my reach?

I think at least one of the Paganini Etudes, the one in E major, is quite a bit simpler than the others. We can only very roughly guess your ability by your repertoire so your teacher is the best person to discuss any concerns and choices with.

Well, i just came here to get different opinions from different people but of course i will discuss it with my teacher. If it helps anyone, my strengths and weaknesses are as follows: I'm best at playing very fast runs, arpeggios, octaves and chords. Glissandos are good also, but i'm not as good with trills and repeated notes. Big leaps don't bother me. Double thirds are OK, although a bit inaccurate sometimes. I need to improve on my ability to bring out the melody line. I have very good memory, so i don't have any problems with memorizing pieces. I can easily reach a 9th with notes in between, and a 10th if i really stretch it, but i can't really utilize that in fast passages.

Btw, i looked at the sheet music for the paganini E major etude that you mentioned, i played the first page, and i'm afraid i've played czerny etudes that are more difficult than that, it's really easy

Just perhaps easier than playing the other Liszt Etudes at a high level.

You can never go wrong with another Chopin etude, although some teachers will poo-poo the slower ones. Any serious pianist will eventually play them all (or most of them) in some capacity. If your looking for something a little off the beaten path, check out the Moszkowski etudes. There are several that are really nice. Ultimately, you should pick something you'll enjoy working on!

You should choose etudes on the basis of your weaknesses. Without knowing what they are, it is difficult to make suggestions.
Your weaknesses could be different styles of music, so you could look at exercises from various periods, such as the first 30 Scarlatti sonatas, which were published as exercises, C. P. E. Bach's Probestücke, the Gradus ad Parnassum of Clementi, Debussy's or Stravinsky's Etudes, or any number of others depending on what styles you are not familiar with. There are lots of etudes, so maybe you should explore some that are off the beaten track.

I think that the "slow ones" can actually be harder than some of the faster ones! Anyways, I would, personally, play more Chopin etudes. I think they're REALLY helpful. They're more musical than many more etudes, in my opinion, so you do DOUBLE the work: technique AND emotion (deep, deep emotion). Good luck!
Everyday is a great day.

I second this, though the 1838 version if you can manage it.
