Hi,

I'm primarily a Jazz guitar player (albeit not a good one), but due to back problems and inability to practice at night I am thinking of taking up the piano again. I used to be able to play some basic things like Fuer Elise, right now I'm going over the first Alfred book to get up and running with the basics again. My aim is to be able to eventual play solo jazz piano and improvise over jazz standards.

My current setup is an old Studiologic MIDI controller which I bought probably now 15 years ago and a PC with Pianoteq. The sound is OK but I find it difficult to play soft passages accurately, it seems the MIDI velocity is sometimes a bit random. But it might be my non-existant technique frown

As it seems that DP action made some big progress in recent years, does it make sense to invest in a hight end DP (the new MP7/MP11 seems to fit the bill) as a beginner or should I concentrate on getting my skills up with what I have for now?

Thanks for your advice!

DPs have come a long way, and a midi controller isn't technically a DP, so you will definitely benefit from the investment now. I think what you have will not only hold you back, but be uninspiring.

What's your budget? Do you want to continue using a midi-controller-type instrument with software sounds? Or are you looking for a DP with on-board sounds? I ask because you can get the Kawai VPC1 which is a high-end MIDI controller with a great piano feel for $1800. Since you already have that sort of setup, it would be a huge improvement and easy enough to set up for yourself.

They are hard to test out at a store, however, but they have the RM3-II action. I'm not sure which console Kawai DPs that have the same action, but if you try the CA65 or CA95 (Grand Feel action) it will be very similar to that. I own the MP11 (GF action) and I love it. I've heard great things about the MP7, but it's action is not as good as the MP11 (or not as realistic for piano).

Other DPs to try out at Roland 800NX, and Yamaha CP4. These are all around the same price as the MP7 and are intended for stage use, so you won't get the cabinet and on-board speakers. Since you're used to that already, you can use your money to buy you a nicer piano.

Hi moonchild,

I use a Fatar Studio 900 for rehearsals and gigs (+ Galaxy Vintage D) which should be quite similar to yours. While the VPC1 and the like are certainly a step forward, I don't think it's such a big one, that I would recommend you the upgrade right now and would rather concentrate on the playing :-) . IMHO, the progress that has been made in the last 15 years is mainly on the sound side. However, it's always best to try on your own.

Best regards,
Thomas
