I have tuned my piano using Tunelab Pocket. I kept the default partial setting.

Why might I need to change from the default pairing or to alter the partial table?

Ian

Hi Ian,

One example is it can be useful to change partials in TL while you tune the bass strings. Strings in this area often have different amplitudes for given partials and unless you use a very good microphone, pressing F3 or F4 will give you a stronger "peak" on the display.

Ah! Thanks for your reply its clearer now.

I had noticed two or three strings where no matter how I tuned them the height of the graph was under 25% of the others. I did not understand why this was happening. I'll try other pairings,

Ian

TL is excellent to save time when creating a custom stretch for a particular piano based on its iH. But since partials can vary quite a bit from one wound string to another as you go in the lower octaves, you can achieve better results tuning the bass by ear.

You can also save custom "offset" settings for each key in your piano tuning file. For example, if on my piano B0 sounds just fine with an additional -12 cents because it has certain strong "different" partials, I enter this value in the Custom Stretch for B0 box under Current settings.

Another piece of useful information. I think its time for me to re-read the manual!

thanks,

Ian
