I've tried to keep all my regular appointments (lessons, regular rehearsals and coaching sessions) to a few designated days. Then for the gigs which come up, if I have any say in the date I can specify "not Wednesday or Thursday", for example. If it's something I really want to do and it clashes, I reschedule students and others. My students are aware of this possibility from the start, and are happy with either another date, or a credit. But I find it surprising that even though at times I'm extremely busy with performing gigs, they very rarely interfere with my scheduled lessons.

Also, most of my performing engagements seem to be weekends and evenings, so there's no clash there as I only teach weekdays, with no evenings at all.

Most of my performances are weekends, and I don't normally teach on weekends. If I have a gig that pays well but conflicts with a lesson, the gig does get priority.

Same a currawong, I try to not schedule students when I have rehearsals or performances to begin with, or if I do, I let them know it will change and we try to find another time that works. Usually I can get everyone in before I have rehearsal. I take Fridays off and sometimes can fit students in there once in a while.

Thank you for sharing. It is helpful. I had a hard time for scheduling last month. Changing will not be easy but I will try one at a time. Hope I can manage well balanced schedule.

As a student I find value in having a teacher who is a performer, and the occasional inconvenience in scheduling doesn't bother me.

But my needs would be very different from average. I would expect many parents would find it difficult.

That is helpful opinion. Most of time, private students are flexible. But parents from music schools have different perspective. They don't want teachers to have long time off or a lot of sub teachers.

My last piano teacher--- one of the better ones I've had--- was also a performer. Since it was possible for me to be somewhat flexible with our regular appointments, it was not so difficult for him to also schedule performances. On occasions when he needed a page turner, I used to do this for his rehearsals and performances. It was a good experience; it opened a of of doors, and I discovered that there is a lot of live music going on in our quiet little town. Without this relationship, I would never have known about it.

I would say that it could be a good thing to encourage your students to come to the local performances, even if they don't have a 'job' there.

Besides the local insider knowledge, I learned how well-respected my teacher was by the groups he worked with, and that is never a bad thing to know.
