I am looking for a used Yamaha piano for my son for weeks. Currently have some options as followings, :-

1. Yamaha P116S, 25 years old, the seller is the second owner of this piano, she is a part time piano teacher and this piano was used for teaching students for 4 years. Price is C$ 4500

2. Yamaha U3, 37 years old, seller is a pianist in university year 4. He is selling it for financial reason. This piano is made in China. He bought it as a refurbished piano. Price is C$5500

3. Yamaha U1, 22 years old. The man who sell it has his own business AND only sell Yamaha used piano. But not a dealer. C$ 5850. including delivery ( delivery is around C$ 300).

All these three pianos looks good for me. I am worry about the 37 years old U3 sounds a little aged, but I heard U3 is a good piano. Myself can not play piano. Before I decide to buy I will have a piano technician to check the piano. I want some help on which one is a better choice compare to the $$ amount and the piano quality, then I will arrange a piano technician to check it. Thanks for all the responses.

Wow, those are extremely high prices. The U1 is close to the price of a new one.

I don't think any of them are close to a good buy.

Keep looking, or change the brand if that's what Yamaha prices go for where you are.

Take care,

Steve

Steve, thanks for reply. I am living in Halifax. Only one dealer here and not many choices at all. The new U1 here is C$ 9800.-
I know the price is much higher than in Toronto and Montreal. But.... That is the only we have here now. Just try to get a better one among these three.

These are very high prices for such old pianos. Bargain down the prices, or look elsewhere.

For curiosity's sake, why do you insist on the Yamaha brand?

Yamaha U3s are not made in China. And all these pianos are priced high.

Halifax is remote so if the prices there are high it's a given.
The U1 seems by far your best choice because of age and model. (No 1: heavy use. No 2: If it's a U3 it is not made in China, is it really a U3?)
However all depends on condition. Have a tech check it out. (costs you approx $100).

Being in a smaller, remote community cuts both ways. There's very likely a lot less demand so that might even things out. I'd try to figure out what prices would be in a larger metro, add a little premium (15-20%) to it and offer that to the dealer.

If she doesn't budge then I'd look at buying from another town or even eBay. You might even be able to buy a brand new Yamaha U1 and have it shipped there for about the same price. It's nice to test it out before hand, but if it's new you'll most likely be much happier with that then any of those.

Thanks for all these responses. I have the serial number of U3 here with H2716642. Then I went to yamaha website and showing this is from China ? Maybe I am wrong.

It is a good idea of getting a new one and shipping to my city. i never think about that. I will check.

Then, seems U1 is a good choice among these three ?

Just so you know, I've shipped pianos to Halifax. You could get a Yamaha in Montreal and ship it.

I was wondering what might be available in Montreal or Quebec for better selection. Pianos can certainly be shipped to your gorgeous city!
