This month on Piano Price Point I spent some time interviewing Jack Brand. Jack is 3rd generation felt maker. He's incredibly knowledgeable, humble and provides some great insights. His companies manufactures felt for over 200,000 pianos annually and most of the top piano makers in the world use his felt. You can read more about it here: Piano Blog

Enjoy!

Thanks Glen for the interview,
Continuous sheets of felt for making a complete set of hammers was invented by Henri Pape, in France around 1825. By the 1850's this type of piano hammer was the industry standard.

There is an American hammer felt maker that has supplied Steinway NY, and Ronsen Piano Hammer Co for many years named Bacon. Jack didn't mention them.

Hi Ed:

Bacon does not supply Steinway.

Hi Steve,
I was told they do use Bacon. I can't confirm or deny it as a fact.

What source is your information from?

Website photos can be out of date, but I notice that Bacon Felt still shows a picture of a S&S fallboard on their piano hammer felt website page.

I double checked with Jack and this is his answer:

The Bacon method is basically the Royal George method. As a matter of fact, after the Royal George method was sold to Japan and the plant in England was shut down, the former production manager of Royal George went to work for Bacon in the USA and applied that method.Today Bacon produces a very small number of hammer felt sheets. To the best of my knowledge, they supply only Steinway New York, not Steinway Hamburg with top hammer felt.
And they only cover a part of Steinway New York's needs.

Cheers
Glen

I don't use the PM function but if you'd send me an email -- ddfandrich@gmail.com -- I sure appreciate it. Now I'm curious.
