Any self taught piano players/composers here. If so, how and when did you start playing/composing music ?

I started at the age of fourteen, I believe, not having any interests outside of maths or any real friends outside of maths, or any real thoughts outside of maths...um...the major appeal of the keyboard, the idea of arranging relative frequencies aesthetically was somewhat stimulating when I came across it; a piano in the hall of my school. Nobody was allowed to play it, but there was no lock on the lid of that delicious Bluthner, so I'd get kicked off it maybe twice a day when a teacher walked past. Um...I joined the orchestra, concert band and jazz band of that school and also started composing immediately, performing in school concerts since a few months of starting. My parents thought it was a distraction; maybe nice that I have a hobby but nothing serious, that it shouldn't interfere with all the Serious Maths I could be doing. Since then, I've ditched public performance, ditched through-composition, stopped focussing on maths, um, started thinking in terms of "landscape", "colour", "imagery", and other such words I'd have crucified myself for saying in the past. I've still yet to have a lesson... frown Still, I can't think of a better education than listening to the best pianists playing (except, you know, technically I can...*cough*) laugh

He asked a question and I answered it.

Edit: Oops, I didn't see that he also asked "how". I guess I he's looking for stories? Mine isn't very interesting. whistle

I'm 64 soon. I got some education (by unprofessional teachers) on the pump organ between age 10 and 15. After starting on the piano at age 16 I had no supervision.

When I was a kid I liked to improvise on the pump organ. As a teenager I tried writing songs of questionable quality. At about 18 I got interested in classical music and since then I have occasionally written some pieces.

I do not recommend learning piano the way I did. With a good teacher I would have developed my skills much faster and probably reached a higher level.

At present I play and compose like this: https://app.box.com/s/ipio10mg9aj7hoo1ev1t

Self, book, and internet (mostly here) taught from 2010 until last week. I started a junior college extension class to fill in the gaps.

I was self taught for about a year and a half until some teachers corrected me. I was 11 or 12 when the interest developed. I learned to read using a hymnal and counting the lines and spaces from a fixed point and asking anybody I thought had knowledge for advice. I made good use of the elementary school music teacher, in case any of you out there does that work and thinks nobody appreciates you!

And now to a serious reply: I've been composing for the most part of my life.

Part reason was that I didn't enjoy what I was offered to study in piano lessons!
Part reason was that I felt I could do better (heh)

without guidance all I had to do is copy (pastiche) what I was hearing (and couldn't play or study for some reason).

Then came the official studies and the rest.

The last time I was taught by a real live teacher was around forty years ago, so I guess I've been "self-taught" in some sense ever since. So, to answer the question in the OP, I started out as a self-taught pianist at that point, when I stopped being "other-taught".
