I was given this piano by a elderly friend who is downsizing to assisted living. What can anyone tell me about the Lyon and Healy baby grand? Serial Number is 32504- so it was made in 1920. There are two interesting paper labels on the underside "For the Advancement of Music", National Association of Music Merchants and the second is "For the Advancement of Music" National Piano Manufacturers Association. L&H were considered top-tier in harps, and very well thought of in pianos, and didn't make too many after 1935, until recently it seems to have popped up again.

I know it is not a "stickered" L&H, because it is engraved on the iron. My piano technician says it is in remarkedly good shape. Very true sound, stayed at standard. New strings (if 20 years is new), soundboard intact, felts good, no insect activity, everything fits and does what it should. The action is a little heavy and she has taken that to her shop to correct. It tuned up very easily with a rich tone. My elderly friend had the piano for 26 years. It was refurbished/refinished two years before she received it (she didn't know the extent). I am the third owner. I know that for the last five years it hadn't been tuned or played; however it has been stored in the house, climate controlled.

My piano technician couldn't tell me much more because she had never seen a L&H in 35 years. But she did say that it was a wonderful piano.

Anyone have one? Played one? Know anything about else the history.

I don't know a lot about them except that I had one my Dad restored for me (he worked at the Everett Piano co. in So Haven, MI) I got it when I was about 15 years old in 1956 until I got out of the Navy in 1966 and traded it for my current Yamaha.

I believe Lyon and Healy was a music company in chicago that had a big store.

I have nothing but good memories of it. It was a very nice sounding, easy to play piano that served me well. It was very stable and reliable.

I very nice piano in my opinion.

The favorite piano of the Marx Brothers. Harpo really dug them.

Lyon & Healy grands varied widely in quality.

They are still in business, but only make harps now.

As an aside, let me throw this into the mix.

I had a dear friend who was married to the co-owner (with his brother) of Lyon & Healy Harp and Music Co. Yep, the whole ball of wax in Chicago.

When Ray and Nancy set up their home, they chose a rebuilt 1929 Steinway, not a Lyon & Healy. Though L&H was the Steinway dealership, and they could have chosen any new instrument that they wanted, they chose a vintage S&S for their own home. It is the piano that I am lucky enough to now own and play daily.

In March, a dear friend passed away and I was co-executor of his estate. He owned a Lyon & Healy small grand. It was not well taken care of, as he thought of it as more decorative than as a musical instrument. I got an RPT to check it out. After a much needed tuning and thorough examination, he said that it was in decent, servicable, condition. He did recommend a full regulation and voicing, however.

At the estate sale the L&H sold for $12,000 !!!!!!!!!!! The buyer was a harpist, played a L&H concert harp, and always wanted a L&H piano.
