just try to have the octave energy coupling, without making it too much "rounded" in the basses.
I mean do not look for beats too much, more for an enhancement in the global tone. then only listen for beats.
You can also train your hear to listen only at the partials and find the place where they seem to go along together well
In a single unison it can do as a rainbow, with the touch of "light" coming form lower to higher partial, or the opposite , depending of the direction you are going.
That may learn you to control the lever to the max, it will be way easier then to set the pin correctly.
Just try going 1/4 of the normal speed with the lever, very slow and very progressive while raising, then use mostly the string to put the pin in place, while helping it with the lever but lightly. Look at the late videos I posted, see how Ian Jocher allow the pin to take its place naturally, with firm blows and light pressure on the lever.
You need to be "sure" of when the good pitch is attained while raising (hence the advantage of tuning very slowly) then be very attentive at the amount of torque added above that point, and that will need to untwist in the end.
Good luck.
