I would like to do an experiment to see if I (and other forum readers) can tell a difference between legato and staccato with the sustain pedal down.

Here are two MIDI files, one of

(Yes, I know the time signature is wrong.)

and one of

Please play them on a player piano, and record them (both the same way). Then, either upload them without identifying them, or give them to me, in a lossless codec.

Thank you for your time.

Edit Reason: .zip didn't work; changed to link.

I see four quarter notes in a bar so why is the time signature wrong? BTW. the zip seems to be empty.

Nice experiment.

But are you sure midi can handle this?

What my tech says is that the hammer hits the strings on slightly different places, depending on how you *distribute* the force on the hammer over time. For example, force at the end of the downstroke versus force at the start. I think midi does not capture this kind of detail.

Seems like .zipped MIDI's don't work. I put a link in.

Time signature was "wrong" if anybody recognized the Rondo from the Waldstein (which is in 2-4 time).

I am sure that MIDI records attack and release times for notes and pedals. Attack velocities are the same for legato and staccato, so hammer shank flexing should be the same.

Are you going to record Waldstein? If so, when you are finished, could you please post both a MIDI and an MP3/audio version?

Anyway, what player system do you have? Does your player system record release velocities for both the notes and the pedal?

I think posting this in the Mechanical Instruments/Player forums will get greater information, but you're welcome to post it here.

I'm not confident enough with myself to record the Waldstein.

I don't have a player piano. That's why I'm asking someone with a player piano to play it. There are no release velocities AFAIK. If there are, they're not recorded (the keys) or they're the same (pedal).

I didn't even see the Mechanical Musical Instruments forum. I think I'll link to here.
