I gotta say, every time I hear classical music I can't stand it. No matter what style or kind. It drives me nuts!!

My dad listens to it in the kitchen daily while eating dinner, and I just go to another room or outside. Let's just say we all eat at separate times!

There are other genres of music I don't like, like rap or country or new age, but they don't get on my nerves like classical.

Basically the only thing I enjoy is pure jazz or classic rock. I am very picky with my musical tastes.

Any other people feel the same way towards classical?

When you mature a bit, you'll realize there's only two kinds of music, good and bad. All the other demarcations are just meaningless and artificial.

And to complicate things the line between good and bad can be highly subjective !!

No, I'm asking people if classical music grates on their ears. Not good and bad music. That cliche catchphrase is thrown around like nothing. Plenty of "bad" music in the popular realm that rakes in alot of $.

and lots of "good" music being obscured.

Don't twist this thread into your own agenda. Tell me if you don't like classical.

How come you do not like any kind of classical music? Probably your father is a music illiterate and has a bad taste or listens to a radio station, but "classical music" is a broad term. My taste of music is like this:
I can't stand Mozart, Haydn, most of the baroque composers except Bach and Scarlatti, Spanish classical music and opera, with the exception of Strauss, Wagner and 20th century works.
I too enjoy listening to jazz, ie. Evans, Coltrane and Davis, and also to progessive stuff like King Crimson or Fripp's solo works..
Considering that you like jazz, I think you might enjoy Rachmaninoff (Piano Sonata No. 2) or Prokofiev (Piano Concerto No. 2, one of which has a clear jazz influence and the other very interesting harmonies and a creative piano writing.

There are genres that I don't like that much, but really nothing that "gets on my nerves" like you describe. Is it *all* types of classical? Solo piano, trios, big orchestras, with or without violins?

You seem to have an issue with classical, I wonder why- could it be because your parents forced you when you were a kid and you hated it?

I would never attempt to play classical in public because it's way to hard for me but when someone drops by and plays some Rachmaninoff or Chopin, and gets it right it's a real treat.

Well the biggest thing I don't like about classical is the "starchness" of it. Once you play jazz and have that freedom, classical sounds boring as heck. Very rigid. Music really isn't meant to be played note for note.

I did do the whole classical repertoire as a kid, funny enough I didn't hate the music then. And I was actually pretty good at it, won some local awards blah blah...Used to play Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C#-....never again.

Only when I grew up and really got into jazz and rock that I "found the light".

Honestly as soon as I hear a few bars I gotta turn that stuff off.

Plowboy, good and bad music can come from the same artist. Many musicians have put out crappy albums in the name of profits after building their image and popularity.

I don't have much exposure to classical music. About 30 or so years ago a friend who loved all types of classical music gave me a couple dozen CDs with a wide variety of classical music. I haven't listened to them since he first gave them to me, and even then I didn't listen to them all. However, I remember that there were at least a couple of the CDs that I liked overall, and some CDs I didn't care for even a little. It's been so long now I don't even remember which I liked and which I didn't. But I still have all of them and I've recently been thinking about giving them another try.

Something that does grate on my nerves is guitar riff (I think that's what it's called) in the middle of a song.

When I was growing up my Dad always had the TV on during our meals, which my siblings and I had to sit through since we always ate together as a family. I've been overly exposed to: WWWF, Hee Haw, and The Lawrence Welk Show. Okay, WWWF isn't music related, but it's left a bad scar on my psyche.

This is the least convincing proposition I've ever seen put forth on Piano World.

I've never known anyone who took any kind of music seriously who found all examples of classical music objectionable.

That's simply an unthinking position that might be driven more by an emotional issue than by anything intrinsically related to music.

hey ClsscLib, no it's really just my personal taste in music. Maybe I'm too picky. I could say the same for rap or country music too, I don't like those genres either, but they don't irritate me to the extent that classical does.

A predisposition towards not liking classical music will obviously cause one to not like it. grin

Why we like and dislike certain music is complicated and very hard to decipher (if there even are real reasons behind our tastes). Like you I was brought up with classical music and then completely lost interest in it when I discovered rock and jazz, but I have regained a love of classical now I am over 40. The same may happen to you as you get older. I even like Mozart and Chopin now which I always thought there was never the slightest chance of happening. Tastes change over time.
Maybe when I get to 100 I may like country and western ;-)

I'm with you Wind, never cared for classical music. And I'm 52...age imo is not a factor...we all just have different musical tastes. Which is great...just think how boring it'd all be if we all enjoyed the same type of music.

There's even some jazz that I don't care for, like the Wynton Marsalis old style swing, or dixieland. I do prefer the modern approach.

What about Jazzy classical music like some of Debussy, Ravel or Faure? Do you even find those to be annoying?

I like classical. I'm not much good at playing it. I do understand that in the U.S., classical (lumping together baroque, romantic, classical) has maybe 1% market share in terms of revenue, and listeners.

More than a few friends simply can not stand classical and will not listen to it, will not go near it. I see this as typical.

Unusual is a person that will enthusiastically attend a classical concert. There is a local classical concert series (Classical Crossroads in Torrance, CA) that I have told many local people about. Maybe 5% have any interest at all. Cost is not an issue, because the admission is give whatever you like, or nothing at all. No one is turned away.

Quality is unlikely to be the issue, because the performers are very good. Many are competition winners, others have advanced music degrees. All are excellent and accomplished musicians.

The issue is that most people would rather do something else than listen to classical music. The Piano World forums tend to be classically dominated so the responses do not surprise me. I'd guess 80% like and play classical and about 50% spend at least half their piano time on the genre.

I don't consider Debussy and Ravel to be jazz. There are jazzers like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter who have taken their sounds and been influenced by them. There is a subset called "Impressionist jazz" from Herbie's early days that follows that.

Here's a guy doing a jazzy/classical song, a Russian composer:

Thanks for sharing the video. it was nice!

Ravel's piano concerto in G Major sounds quite a bit like Jazz to me. Also, some of Debussy's preludes sound like Jazz. For example, Général Lavine – eccentric from Book 2.

Anyway, to each their own. I enjoy most forms of music, but I just can't digest dubstep, which I consider to be semi rhythmic noise grin

I guess we all have that something which we just don't like.

I don't think anyone does. noobpianist said Jazzy classical, that is, classical with jazz influences.

I think most classical enthusiasts accept that their preference is a minority one and always will be. It certainly doesn't bother me to be part of this minority. I'm happy to like what I like and let others like what they like. But classical is a vast area, far wider than a few 19th century piano pieces. If someone really wanted to find some classical they could like, they'd probably be able to. But they might have to explore a bit.

We finally agree on something. Most classical music I don't like. Especially stuff before the late 1800s. A lot of 20th century stuff I don't like either, but there are some outstanding exceptions:

I love Debussy, Ravel, Mussorgsky, Elgar's 'Cockaigne Overtures" and some things along those lines.

I'm generally with you on this, but there's some hiphop I like a lot, it tends to be groovy: Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, Camp Lo.

Help! I'm agreeing with Polyphonist!

If you can't find something to like in all eras of music, you're listening with your biases and not your ears.

Can't stand most Hip-Hop but I get a kick out of the audacity and creativity of Lil John and Die Antwoord.

No, I can't stand any classical music. No matter what kind. I immediately want to jazz up the tune and throw in some cool jazz chords.

It's like a bad allergic reaction whenever I hear it.
