In this Yamaha USA website, the serial number for piano made in Japan is only up to 2010. What if I wanna verify a piano made after 2010?

You can try the serial number search instead. It will tell you if the piano was manufactured for the US market.

Not sure why Yamaha stopped at 2010. Perhaps they will update it sometime in the near future...

Thanks. I tried. It only tells you if the piano is made for US without year info. It is weird Yamaha does not provide up-to-date info...

Several piano makers who bother to provide age listings by serial number stop a few years before the present date. I can think of one or two reasons why:

1. Websites might not be updated. There's a good portion of the industry whose web presence looks like 12 years ago...

or, more likely

2. Buying pianos isn't like buying eggs at the supermarket. Sometimes they stay on the dealer's floor for 1-5 years before they are sold. Technically, they are new pianos if the manufacturer's warranty is in place and the piano has not been sold before. To new shoppers, this can seem really weird and perhaps even dishonest. I would counter this thinking with the notion that pianos "teethe" and are most in need of adjustments during their first year or so. I'd much rather take delivery of a 2 year old piano that was played, tuned, and adjusted at a good shop than one that was delivered straight from a crate, because I know it would be less trouble and more stable sooner.

Because of the second point above, manufacturers may be choosing to obscure their most recent serial number data. The most stable piano I ever owned was purchased as a 5-year old leftover at a dealer...

You may be very well correct on your second point.

However, I would think there would have been other times in the past where the same situation happened. Yet all serial number have been tracked through 2010.

I'm hoping that the real reason is laziness on their part in keeping the website up to date. Eventually they are going to have to update this information. Ten years from now if the website still stops at 2010 that would be completely unacceptable to the average resale buyer and would put Yamaha owners/dealers at a disadvantage.

Hi Brian,

I just looked at a few easily accessible serial number databases from manufacturers.

Brand "K" stops at 2012
Brand "S" stops at 2010
Brand "B" stops at 2012

It seems to be a rather widespread practice. I suspect you'll see those manufacturers who provide online databases will continue to stop the listings at 2-5 years in the past for the reasons I outlined above.

Thanks for the information!

As a side note, in addition to the obvious serial number on the inside of our piano, I have also have a small card included in our owners packet that lists the actual manufacturing date. I would advise all owners of post-2010 Yamaha pianos to keep this tag for later historical purposes.
