Chopin wrote his op.46, more an arranged version of a concerto then anything else, Alkan outdid him in his op.39 8/9/10, and a certain Edouard Wolff, an acquaintance of Chopin's, wrote his Allegro de concert op.39 indeed and dedicated it to Chopin, quite interesting. This Wolff-piece, its' on imslp, has never been recorded, played (?) or otherwise been in some pianist's hands it seems, it's in mine now, anyone cares to join the effort and discuss the piece from experience?

I've played through Op. 46 a few times, only in private. The difficulty level is mostly not too high, but there are a few passages that are almost unplayable at full speed. The material is not terribly inspiring, and the ending feels like it was tacked on to try and make it stand on its own.

I know nothing at all about Wolff.. I am willing to give it a shot.

I think it's worse than the Chopin in diff. but totally unknown to the world, hence.

It's got some pretty dramatic and arresting concertante writing, and I see evidence of some really high quality training.. but it's lacking in any melodic interest. And Schlesinger's editing is absolutely horrible.

Without having really listened to his work, on the merit of this Allegro I would have to put him somewhere around Hummel and Dussek in the pantheon of not-quite-amazing early Romantics.

Hummel and Dussek are much older, he's younger than Chopin, so he must be classed in the Alkan-category, btw, there is a tune, and a haunting one at that.

I was unable to play through the piece when you first posted it, due to not having a piano at hand. Having just played through it twice, I will register an opinion: it seems a thoroughly ordinary second-rate Romantic work - overblown, at least three times too long for the material, but not utterly devoid of interest.

Interesting to read that old thread, particularly since there were contributions by some members who I miss.

sotto voce was an odd one. For a long time we got along great, but unaccountably turned very nasty in a PM shortly before he was banned. I've long ago deleted those PMs.
