I am sick of my left appendage improving and then relapsing. The doctors don't know whether my arm, elbow and wrists will improve permanently. Thus I am reluctant to spend $40,000 upwards on a grand piano that I may not be able to use.

An alternative approach would be to "bite the bullet" and buy a modest piano - a good-quality upright. It will fit much more easily into my home, and I can resume playing again. If my arm continues to give me problems, I haven't blown a small fortune on a piano, and I can sell it easily. If my arm does improve, I can always trade it in for a nicer one.

Using that approach, I have been scouting around for a used Charles Walter upright. I have found two promising choices so far.

Both are in near-mint condition and have been well-maintained. Both are being sold by well-regarded dealers who will clean, tune, voice and regulate (if needed) to my satisfaction, and provide one free in-home tuning. Both have Renner actions. Both come with benches. There the similarities end.

Piano #1 is a 43.5" Queen Anne console, in a semi-gloss cherry finish. It is 6 years old, with 6 years left on the manufacturer's warranty.

Piano #2 is a 45" studio model in a semi-gloss ebony finish. It is 3 years old, with 9 years left on the manufacturer's warranty. A Dampp-Chaser is installed.

My question is - what would be a fair price for each of these instruments?

I never got on the negotiating table for CW's, but let's just assume 25% off the SMP for a brand new one:

PianoBuyer Link

That puts most of their uprights around $10K new. 3-6 years old, which is very new, maybe knock off about another 25%.

So about $7.5K? I have no idea, first confirm that 25% off SMP is achievable, maybe go to a new CW dealer and offer 40% off SMP and see if he barks at you and where he counters.

Wherever that is, I'd say knock off about 20-25% since you're not getting the brand-new, static wrap experience.

edit: Or look on ebay to get some comps:

Under $6K

I'd say between 7-8k. The two eBay Walters in the above link are both from 1998…not 2008.

If they are both in the same condition-the wood finish one should command about $1K-$2K more than the ebony.

That is fair.
