Any interest in an SCC?
Here is the rules, suggestions very welcome:

* Contribution must be in music-XML
* Contribution should be anonymous until voting is over (post submissions by a pm to me)
* Contribution must be submitted before 1 August 2014.
* After submission period, contributions are presented in sheet and sound, and voting begins in this thread.
* What to vote on is "I like this contribution most", but more voting targets may be added, so we may have multiple winners. Please suggest on this. Like, happiest tune etc.

The reason for bullet one is: this is an composition forum, therefor I will take the music-XML and perform on the same midi instrument, giving no contestant advantege through performance.

Also, perhaps contributions could be presented as they drop in, instead of waiting for submission deadline.

Again, suggestions welcome!

It's a nice idea, but there just isn't enough of a community on this forum to make that work.

Oh I don't know about that. Why be so negative? I'd be interested. It sounds like it would be a competition of based on quality and appeal. We might get a new age winner or we may not. It's worth trying to find out.

In this context, it is a computer-file, comparable somewhat to a MIDI-file.
Many music notation program can import and export using the Music-XML file format. I've moved stuff between noteflight and musescore for example. It isn't 100% perfect with regards to layout, but the playback seem to work ok.

Do I interpret this correctly we have a volunteer for the new-age submissions?

LOL, that would not be me. But I have begun work on a nocturne for piano. My point was if there is voting then chances are a more popular style will garner more votes. That could be new age, it could be jazz, it probably won't be dodecaphonic.

So, I've given some thought to rules. Is there a minimum length (I'd suggest at least 2 minutes)? What instrumentation, this is a piano forum, do we limit it to piano or do we allow other instruments? Can we record our own performances and if so is a computer generated performance okay (please say yes)?

I have some of the same questions. If I was reading larry's post correctly, I think he will take everyone's Music XMLs and play them on the same midi instrument, so I guess we can't play or record our own pieces... I'm also under the impression it would be exclusively piano since he intended on playing it "on the same midi instrument"... But that's just me trying to critically read his post. Best wait for some answers.

I personally would like to enter some of my solos / quartets / small groups I have been working on, but piano music does just fine!

The problem with xml is that it either will work as a performance, or as a score, but not both (most of the times). I think that it would be better served, if we were to send in midi files, and xml files (or PDF files? I mean how good can one be to recognize a score and the creator, by looking at it?)

A proposed update to the rules, with comments:

* Composing/performing for other instruments than solo piano is allowed.

* Voters will vote for "best score", "best score for solo piano"

A "best score", is judging among all submitted scores, voters discretion.
A "best score for solo piano", is all submitted scores for just solo piano.

* contributions can come in forms:
* Music-XML (will be played back by musescore-1.3)
* Performance in MP3/WAV/MIDI plus score in PDF

Thinking what Nikolas says is true, it could become a nightmare trying to get both correct playback, AND a visual correct score. I'll do my best to get it working with MS1.3

Do we need a time limit? Or maybe a subclass to vote on, "best bagatelle"? I'd love to see works of various sizes, but maybe it's hard to compare them.

Deadline for any rules change are 30 Jun, so we have whole july to compose.

Current proposed rules (they are many, but are specified to get a somewhat open competition):

Composer rules:

* Composing/performing for other instruments than solo piano is allowed.
* A composer can submit as many contributions as they want. All submissions will be included.
* Contribution submitter can be anonymous until voting is over (post submissions by a pm to me)
* Contribution must be submitted during july 2014.
* contributions can be submitted in these formats:
+ Music-XML (will be played back by musescore-1.3)
+ Performance in MP3/WAV/MIDI plus score in PDF

Voters rules:
* After submission period, we will have a two-week voting period during august. This occurs in the vote-thread.
* A separate vote-thread will be opened in July where contribution are posted, either publicly by the submitter, or anonymously through a PM to me.
* Voters can submit three votes:
1) "best submission", of all submitted contributions.
2) "best solo piano submission", of all submitted contributions which qualify.
3) "best bagatelle", of those submitted contributions that are below 2 minutes.

These rules sound good to me!
Will both the recording & score be presented to the voters, or just one of the them?

Both will be presented, but the voter should consider the recording only a guide to judge the score. This also means a recording-only contribution cant enter.

What about scores only? I plan on recording mine, but just in case I can't, will a score alone be disqualified?

I would like to demand that a score-only submission is in Music-XML format. That way I can render a recording from musescore. I'm basing this rule on my belief that it would ease the voters work. The submitted score and my rendering, will be in all rights reserved with regard for copyright which owner including my rendering falls to the submitter.

By the way, I would like to add an rule:

* Walk-over is possible: A contributor can submit a submission that will not be subjected to voting.
The primary reason I add this rule, is if anyone has worked all july but not finished.
If so I would still like to add those submissions, for acknowledge.

Please begin your post in the voting-thread with "WALK-OVER".

About something else, what are your thoughts on a compilation published on youtube? Would google in any way (full or partial) own that work?

If too many is against this, I will trash this idea. But for know, I'm planing on a compilation.
Please mark your submissions in the voting-thread with "YOUTUBE", so I know you've explicitly granted this.

I think you just need to PM the links/files of all necessary documents to larryz
