Hi, all--well I love my grand piano, but after the family goes to bed I just stare at it longingly. Thinking I want to spend about $1000 on a digital piano for nighttime. Maybe the Casio PX850? I can't find one in town so I would have to order it without playing it.

Anyway, being very new to digital pianos and not very tech savvy I have what is probably a silly question. I like to hear recordings of my playing so that I can improve. The product description states:

"An easy to use USB port and built in two track recorder can record and playback your practice and performances."

Well I was hoping to just hit "record," play a piece, and then just hit "play" and have the piano just play it back. But all this talk about USB? It sounds like I have to record the piece onto a USB thumb drive and then load it onto my computer. Or else connect the piano to my computer via USB, record, and then listen to it on my computer (with headphones? or speaker?). Why can't the piano itself just play my pieces back for me directly? Why does the computer have to be involved? Or does it? I'm confused.

Hi hotcat. You don't need a computer. You can record to the USB drive and then play it right back on the PX-850. You can also bring the USB drive to your computer and upload it, email to friends, etc. This is done with the USB port on the front of the keyboard (USB to device).

The OTHER USB port (USB to host) is on that back.. this connects to the computer for playing or recording MIDI files.

Hope this helps!

ps. If you get the PX-850 and ever need help, there is a Privia forum I help Admin at http://www.casiomusicforums.com/index.php?/forum/10-privia-x50-series/

Oh, that's good to know! Is this a "quick and easy" process? i.e. if I wanted to play & listen to a short passage several times in a row, would this be easy to do? If I have to save, name the file, and then scroll down & select it every time, or whatever, well that could get tedious, if you know what I mean. And I don't see any sort of screen on the piano which would enable you to select a file to play back. I do realize this question probably sounds ridiculous. Oh well...

The next step (if nobody answers) is to download the PX-850 user manual, and go to the section on "Recording Your Playing".

The manual is here:

PS -- on the PX-350, it's a simple process. The PX-350 offers both MIDI and audio recording. It can be a bit confusing figuring out what's what.

Sorry for derailing, but if I wanna use my PX850 as a midi controller for OTHER midi devices, how should I go about it? From what I see its only for PC/MAC or iPAD with the camera connection kit. Not as flexible as the old midi in midi out outputs.
