Depends what you want it for and are comparing? State some requirements and budget.

The CP4 is a stage piano. It doesn't have speakers but it does have a nice action, three different sampled pianos, and a lot of extra voices.

The Motif XF has two of the sampled pianos that are in the CP4, but has a balanced keyboard, not a piano-type action.

The CLP-585 has the CFX sample that's in the CP4, and also a Bosendorfer. It has some piano features the CP4 and the Motif XF don't have, like Virtual Resonance Modeling. It doesn't have as many extra voices. It's in a big cabinet with speakers.

The CP4 and Motif XF are intended to be portable - the CLP-585 isn't. It sounds like the CLP-585 is your best bet unless you want portability. If that's the case, try the CP4.

Any reason you're only choosing from Yamahas?

The CP4 action didn't feel very piano like to me at all last time I tried it. Maybe I'm missing something but don't know why some on here recommend it for that purpose.

I'll hope to give the CP4 another try and the new 585 when I get the chance but I'd think the 585 should feel much more realistic. It'd also be way over your budget though.

Being picky, but best action does not equate to best 'piano-like' action. I don't think any DP action is realistically piano-like despite all the hubris on this board about some of them. But many of them are extremely playable with great connection to the sounds. The CP4 falls in that category IMHO (as with quite a few others).

Yes but I think the OP was looking for a more piano like action (very few details given). At the price of the CP4 I'd think there were more realistic actions if that is what he's looking for.

I think if you're comparing the CP4, you need to compare it to other stage pianos in that price range. The others you listed, one is a synth (Motif) and the other is a console piano (not stage) and well out of the price range of $2300.

Now we know your budget, and you want a piano with a great piano feel and sound. Do you need a stage (portable) or console? If stage, does it need to be lightweight? Will you be gigging with it, or is it for home use?

We can recommend some other DPs to compare with the CP4 if we have a bit more info. AFAIK, the CP4's sounds are OK, feel is OK, and it's lightweight compared with other brands in its class. But there are better stage pianos that are heavier/bigger in your price range.

I want a DP for home use. But price and space are constraints. So lower price and smaller footprint are better. Lightweight is good, but not my consideration.

For sounds and actions, I want the best I can get at the price range.

AFAIK, Motif and CLP series are known for top quality sounds and feel. At least for Yamaha. Not sure whether CP4 surpasses Motif and CLP in terms of feel and sounds.

What other options besides the CP4 fit the bill.

VPC1 + software piano.

That was my first thought, too. If you have an adequate computer (not too demanding, for Pianoteq), the only additional cost is for loudspeakers, if you need them.

motifmm6, your username makes me think you like MOTIF synthesizers. The MOXF8 has the CFIII and S6 sample set and GHS action. Not Yamaha's best graded action, but also not their worst. Some people here like GHS a lot. It fits your budget at $1,700.

At $1,700 budget it would also be wise to to take a thorough look at the Kawai MP7. It's a great stage piano with a hint of workstation for an extremely fair price.

Another vote for VPC + some software piano. You'll get a great piano action and great piano sound. After buying the software and accessories needed, you'll be at or below your max price.

Good suggestions, all. But I prefer to have just a slab piano and playing off the stock sounds without the need to attach it to a computer. Less wires, less mess.

Take your pick.

Opinions about GHS do vary, but which do you think is their worst?

I had a graded hammer effect board for a while. It was playable but had a really weird feel - white keys too loose, black keys too stiff. GHE is one step down from GHS. I've played GH and NW+GH which are progressively better, so I'm figuring GHS is somewhere in between GHE and GH.

Just noticed there's a long discussion of GHS going on elsewhere that I hadn't looked at.
