In one of the threads on Chopin's Etude in F minor, Op. 25 #2, I posted this video which has performances by 22 "historical" pianists.

I can only identify a few (as indicated below) even though there are pics of all of them. Can y'all fill in the blanks? And of course please say if you think any of the ones that I named are wrong!
(My ID's in regular font; added ID's in bold)

1. ?? (Looks a bit like Kissin but I don't think he's "Historical" yet) smile
It's BACKHAUS (added by Outo)
2. (1:15) Brailowsky
3. (2:41) ARRAU (added by Maxmila)
4. (4:08) RAOUL KOCZALSKI (added by JoelW)

8. (10:17) Cortot
9. (11:39) EUGEN D'ALBERT (added by Maxmila)
10. (14:08) Godowsky? (confirmed by Joel)
11. (15:49) ?? Sofronitsky ??
No, COLIN HORSLEY (added by Outo)

WOW! Backhaus ever looked like THAT? ha

I always thought of him as an old guy. I guess I assumed he was born 70 years old and playing late Schubert. grin

No. 5 looks OH SO Brit, but I don't know who he is...

No. 2 looked a little like a young Michelangeli, but I don't think it's him, because of the lack of the moustache.

No. 7 Alichia de Larrocha

No. 14 Fanny Davies perhaps??!?!?

No. 20 doesn't look like Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli... :-/

It's definitely Alexander Brailowsky.

Even though you're even saying it without a question mark grin ....I doubt it's her. Let's see what other people say.

I barely heard of her, actually not sure I ever did. But, judging from online images of her, I think you could be right. I'll wait before adding her name, but I have a feeling you're right.

I agree. In fact it's hard for me to imagine that guy being a classical pianist at all, looks more like a lounge guy. grin

No.3 looks an awful lot like Rubinstein to me.
No.17 is a picture of David Saperton, Godowsky's son-in-law. It sounds rather tame for him to me.

Could be Myra Hess.

Dunno, I don't see him in that. I think this guy is more "classic looking" than him. Let's see if we get more 'votes' for Rubinstein....

You need to look beyond the fashion of the times smile

I don't know who else it could be...I think I have seen that photo before...

Found some crappy earphones and the playing surely could be him... even with the horrible sound quality it's quite beautiful...

Edit: The only other one that I think looks even remotely like that would be Samson Francois...But I don't think it is...

Yes, I'd agree. The hair is a giveaway. I'll repost that 17 is Saperton, as I doubt my edit will be seen.

Could be Myra Hess.

It sure could!
I think it could be either, even though they don't look alike at all:

Myra Hess:

Fanny Davies:

BTW it seems Davies was usually photo'ed at an angle, maybe because head-on she could look a little scary:

EDIT: I'm going more with Hess. The pianist up there doesn't have that 'scary' look at all.
But how about let's wait before labeling it....

Does anyone else think some of those are played way too fast? Maybe I just love this etude too much.

My main problem with most of them is that they don't bring out the cross-rhythm at all. (Some of them do.)

Besides that, I think almost all the performances are lovely. I think it's an awesome collection.

Nice job!!
Those are 2 pianists that I definitely never heard of....except to the extent that I did know there was a pianist who was mostly known just by his first name of Solomon, and looks like that's Cutner.

(Looks like it's Horsley, not Horshley grin ....but heck, you got it.) smile

btw, HOW do you know about them???

Yeah, I think that's solid enough to be added up there. But anyone please let us know if you have a different idea....

Never heard of him either. I just went and read a little about him, and I'm surprised that I never heard of him before.

I just cannot get enough of historical piano recordings...

But I must confess those two were more thanks to my Google skills...I am not that good with faces so even if I have heard the names before, I could never have identified them...

It's a really boring day at work, so thanks for keeping me entertained smile

That's still pretty good. I tried my google skills on some of these and got nowhere (except just to confirm a couple of them that I thought I knew).
