Have a good time!

I've hiked some of the AT in New England, many years ago. The full Katahdin-to-Georgia trip should be wonderful.

Looking forward to reading your journal, Sam! Ever since reading "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson I've had renewed respect for you thru-hikers. I personally don't have what it takes to give up a comfortable mattress and flush toilet for that long! laugh

Here's a coincidence... I just read today that they're making a movie of "A walk in the woods", starring Nick Nolte and Robert Redford. ha

Thanks everyone for your well-wishes. I started on the 12th and have now completed the first major hurdle - the "100 mile wilderness" in Maine. I added a bunch of entries Nd photos to my trail journal (link in my signature). I have to do all this from my phone, so I can't respond to everyone, but thanks!

Thanks, Sam! I've been checking in every day on your journal, and just finished reading the pre-hike pieces, so your timing is impeccable! Thanks for letting us go along -

I don't think he is able to post his journal daily. That's all.

Hello Sam,

I have and will continue to follow with much interest. Clearly, you are not a newbie to this. It is very inspirational. Next time I start whining on my second K of a two kilometer canoe portage, I'll be thinking of you and ... I will stop whining.

A very nice tribute to your Brother. Stay safe and best wishes for a great journey.

I've made it to Stratton Maine, 188 miles more or less. Only about 2000 miles left to go!

Uploaded more journal entries tonight. Cell phone access has been really bad, so sometimes updates will come in batches.

Its great that people are interested! It gives me incentive to keep going!

Sam

Have read your journal entries with great interest and you have got me started looking into ultralight equipment!

How is the hammock holding up? From what I've read the Warbonnet is pretty comfy!

Is there plenty of water available or are you having to carry quite a lot? Average pack weight?

Feel free to respond to this after you get back to Georgia!

Best wishes.

Hey Sam - I second both above sentiments - "A Walk in the Woods" was both instructive and hilarious - read it several years ago -

My wife and I went biking at Pine Grove Furnace State Park in south central PA recently and met & talked with a group of hikers at the General Store there who were doing the A.T., which cuts right thru the park - we also talked with a "Ridge Runner", one of those who more or less patrol the trail along the way - he had some very interesting stories to tell...

I admire greatly what you're doing - I used to do triathlons and marathons, but they're a piece of baklava compared to what you're attempting - Good Luck!

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. I've made it to Andover, Maine. I'm a little tired (really?), so will take my second zero day (no hiking). I updated the trail journal.

I miss my piano!

Sam
