The KG-1D is a good student's instrument, but...
The piano was no where near the sensitivity and control of the Boston GP193 I tried two days ago. When I tried to play Bach's Goldberg variations, Aria, some of the notes were ghost notes, and just didn't sound, because if you play too lightly, the Kawai will simply not respond.
To what extent can a good piano tech regulate a piano like this, so that it's more sensitive to lower velocities?
The owner said this piano blue booked for about $4-6k, which seems about right.

Kawai from that time we're notorious for having a heavy action. It would probably need rebushed, recentred, refelted - plus a full reweighting and regulation, you could be talking four thousand before it feels right IF it will ever be right.
You would be better to spend 10 thousand on something younger in my opinion

You would be better to spend 10 thousand on something younger in my opinion I seriously doubt that it would need that much work. Likely a lube and regulation would suffice.

Not too heavy and not too light. I call it a "Goldilocks" action. I used the Proteck lube on the flanges and the powdered Teflon on the knuckles and captands. I love that little piano... it has a very nice tone as well. Interestingly enough, I never thought I'd we'd agree on anything. Rick

The piano was no where near the sensitivity and control of the Boston GP193 I tried two days ago. The KG-1D is a very good piano in genenral, and we still service over 100 of these that we sold in the 80's. With proper regulation, voicing and tuning, these can be very good instruments, as capable of subtlety and nuance as any other piano of its size. Keep in mind that you are comparing it to a 6'4" piano (Boston 193), so a more reasonable comparison would be a KG-3D from the period. For fun, why not compare it to a Boston 163 - which would be a more valid comparison - or even a new Kawai GX-1. I think you will find that the traditional sand-cast plate, scale design and action design on the KG-1D compares very favorably to (and in IMNSHO is preferable to) the newer ones.
