Hi everybody,

recently, my band is trying to play more funky stuff apart from the latin and swing standards we normally play. I really love the keyboard sound from a recording by Nils Landgren:

I use the Neo-Soul Keys in the Kontakt player and fiddled around with the settings, but I don't get even close to that sound.

It would be really great if some of you could give a hint, how I can get closer...

Thomas

Try using an amp sim plug-in, with lots of overdrive.

Pianoteq E-Pianos are my favourite. They are so versatile with a very wide range of possibilities.

'Dirty distortion' in the suitcase folder sounds very close to me, especially in the middle zone. It could perhaps penetrate more in the upper register but I suspect it might be possible to do a mod in Kontakt to help with that. You could even split the range over a double loading of the patch and set up the higher zone with an extra few dB -ok there'll be a discontinuity but not the end of the world. When you say it doesn't sound even close, are you playing the same kind of notes/chops as Landgren? If it's not working on live gigs, could it just be a down to amplification?

The Nils Landgren solo sounds like it could have a ring modulator and some compression &/or overdrive to sustain the notes. But this is just a guess smile

A popular effect on the Rhodes in the 70's was the ring modulator rather than straight distortion. Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett used it quite a lot.
