I discovered CBC's "Signature Series" this morning, while listening to a podcast. They are five-minute audio clips describing the "personality" of each of the 24 keys, with fun, inventive mash-ups of well-known music in the given key for a soundtrack. Just delightful!

I think I'm probably mostly C# minor, with some hints of F minor and F major thrown in there for good measure.

Which one are you?

I am B minor.

However, all my friends, colleagues and acquaintances have misinterpreted me as ... Bb minor.

... they are all non-musicians and do not have good ears ...

C# minor. There's just something special about it.

I immediately selected Eb Major and A Major. Then listened to the soundclouds and had a good laugh. Perhaps there's something to this because my first reply whenever asked for my employment title was always "Grand high emperor of the Universe, vanquisher of evil".

And when not wielding a sword, I am most definitely total flibbertigibbet.

B Major totally mesmerizes me but is as far from who I am as could possibly be. I guess I'm just a B Major groupie.

What an amazing body of work! It will take some time to listen to all of it and see which key I am!

When I was very small, a piano fell on me. Ever since then, I have been a flat minor.

(Don't worry, I can find the exit without being manhandled.)

Purkoy,
You might want to be careful. On a music oriented forum like this, those kinds of bad puns can really get you in Treble.

Yes, I agree. Disregarding the silly factor involved with each key-as-human-characteristic storyline, anybody who is interested in musical composition should listen. This is the best working example of key "color" differentiation and usage I've encountered. Kudos to the team that put these together.

A teacher once told me I'm D major

This this reminds me of

Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart (1789)
Ideen zu einer ństhetik der Tonkunst
(translation Ted Alan DuBois)
'Characterization of the keys', p.433

Composers in that era probably were influenced by this work

It seems that Paolo was inspired by this list but messed it up a bit. If you go for this interpretation, Schubart probably is a safer bet.

It's also interesting to see the remarks of Schubart after his list:
Originally Posted By: Schubart

I like A Flat Minor (is not in there, 7 flats, very unusual) because of the MAGNIFICENT C section of Schubert's drei KlavierstŁcke No 2. It is so mysterious and haunting. To me it can sound like many things to me. At one moment it is pure beauty at the other moment it is mysterious and perhaps sad.
I suppose however I am closer to A Flat Major hahaha.. The good woman, I am afraid it doesn't sound very much like a man. :s

D major - my favorite key to play in. Interesting that it's not one of my favorite listening keys. I wonder if that's common.

I immediately though E minor, Eb minor, C# minor. But actually I'm probably more like D major... Now I will have to listen to all of them to see. I am definitely not B-flat minor (the one I'm listening to now).

This is so fun. I'll have to see if I can listen to this on my phone, so I can listen to it while in transit.

I fear I am headed for B-flat minor (the wounded man) but haven't listened to them all yet. And yet, there is a lot of C major in me still!

Those of you with acoustic pianos and tuners willing to play along can get an enhanced experience of key color by moving away from the default tuning of our age - equal temperament. I'd suggest starting out mild, to not jar the senses... Those of you with electronic keyboards may have some temperament choices buried in a menu somewhere - though most are pretty strong.

Think about how many keyboard composers created works when the default tuning was was based on tonality, as opposed to chromatic - the tuning and the music work together to change the experience - both for the performer and listener.

Like to see some graphs of different tuning to see the common characteristics? www.rollingball.com

Be aware that this becomes a heated topic in the tuners' community...

That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw the title. Originally before equal temperament, keys did actually have their own characteristics. I have not listened to the program yet.

Just listened to C Major, it defined what I used to be. It reminds me of so much..
In a way I am still like that, it is indeed, as the narrator says the child inside me, a striking resemblance.. But I am afraid to have changed partially to a minor key..
Still wondering what Minor key. A flat Minor or G sharp minor is perhaps a bit to extreme..

I am not especially interested in playing or listening to D major. I think the teacher ment that my character matches D major.

So, do not confuse the key you like to play, or the key that you like listening to, with they key that you are matching with.

I like D major, for listening and playing. Pachelbel's Canon is in D major, just for a well-known example. (I haven't listened to the D major personality yet though, soon though!)
