it's weird. I tried the pianoteq again today with the F20. The ppp on the pianoteq is better and more beautiful(on the F20, I can only get p or pp ) but the f and ff on the F20 absolutely trashes pianoteq. On pianoteq, it overall feels like you have to work a lot harder to get louder dynamics, something the F20 excels at (i.e. it's easy and natural to get and control loud dynamics). . . .
Pianoteq lets you put in your own velocity mapping, that sets the relationship between the keyboard's MIDI-velocity output, and Pianoteq's internal "loudness" number. If you want Pianoteq to respond "ff" to your touch, rather than "f", just change the curve! That feature is in _all_ versions of Pianoteq, including "Stage". And it's not difficult to use. . Charles

Hi, I´m new to the Forums in writing, because I´ve been reading them for a while...
2 months ago I bought a copy of Ivory II American Concert D and I like it very much. I´ve generated the audiofiles with the current MIDI file (v2.0 if I remember well) using the Cantabile interface Ivory II uses as a standalone application.
Where and how do I upload the files??? (I have generated MP3 and other lossless audiofiles using last demo of Adobe Audition)
BEST REGARDS FROM SPAIN!!!

Ran across this the other day, I had no idea ARM processors had reached this point: http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G138745696275A single board 1.7GHz quad core computer for $65 - retail! I forget - could someone please explain to me again why DPs are required to suck so hard and cost so much with this kind of thing on the open market? Who is holding back my fully sampled Casio for $500?

Don't forget about cheap plastic keys with optical sensor and a very, very far pivot point :p

Very cool little board! If Pianoteq could run on ARM this would be a perfect system for pairing (or evening mounting inside) a VPC1 or other controller. James x

Yes, hook it up to a small screen and a wireless keyboard / mouse and you'd be ready to go. I know there are Linux builds of Pianoteq, but I don't believe any target the ARM unfortunately.

Excuse me, but do I see a small, fanless, inconsequential looking CPU capable of 1.7GHZ x 4, plus 2G RAM, all for 65 dollars? (about £48)?
This - even with Moore's law and so on - is pretty amazing.
If this 'reduced instruction set' technology is so good, why aren't we all using it? Perhaps we are.

If this 'reduced instruction set' technology is so good, why aren't we all using it? Perhaps we are. Here is a wiki on the Exynos processor. There are even more powerful versions of it in various products (Chromebook, Galaxy, etc.) so, yes, we are all already using it (in some sense). If you want 4 cores @ 2GHz + 4 "small" cores + USB3 Hardkernel offers this for $179: http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G140448267127The extremely cumbersome and inefficient Intel architecture should never have been allowed to become as dominant as it has. In a more perfect world IBM would have picked anything but Intel for the initial PCs. (And anything but DOS. That was a match made in heaven - NOT!) I get the feeling the IBM guys were just tossing stuff together in the belief that the PC wouldn't go anywhere.

Man, this could be worked up into a fine stage act: Dewster tells it as it is, just for one night. Have you seen the fees the likes of Clinton and Blair get for those types of engagements? Plus the best vintage port and suchlike. But yours would be much more entertaining and informative.

Here's a better one - $300, Intel, with a Windows 8 license. Drool! $300 with Win8 license, $350 without Win8 license (I keed). The terrible twins (Intel & MS) have been an enormously costly (time & money) and pointless (other than making a few guys crazy rich) diversion in world computing. They are perhaps on their way out, but I wish they would go away faster.

Oops, I should have included Apple (and Adobe) in my rant. Operating systems and other key software need to be open and free.

DPBSD MP3s (With No Reviews)Below are the DPBSD samples I've acquired over the last couple of years but tragically never got around to reviewing. Given my current schedule I'm not sure if / when I might start reviewing again, but I didn't want all the effort these kind folks put into this project to go for naught. Sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed these samples in good faith, I'm very sorry to be dropping the ball like this but I only have so much volunteer time and lately that well has pretty much run dry (and then some). Certainly if / when a slab / console DP comes along that is fully sampled and not looped I'll review it, but (no disrespect to the sample donors) I've completely lost interest in reviewing loopers. Donors quoted below, please PM me or respond in this thread if your want your comments changed / removed. I'll be updating the first post to point to this post and give credit where it is due with the honor roll. And, just to be clear, the "Notes" sections below are the words of the donors, not me.

I'm pretty sure it's not EQ'd and reverb is set to Hall2 (no OFF setting exists, it seems, for reverb.) Finally, sorry for the metronome clicking at the beginning. I could easily just cut it out in the program I converted the WAV file to MP3, ffmpeg. The MP3 file is 16 bit, not 32 bits as you ask for. I believe the original WAV is 16 bit also, not sure if the piano can record at 32 bits." It has a better piano than the original M3 did. But as "better" is always a matter of taste, and people come to rely on certain sounds, some users who upgraded from the original M3 to the Expanded version were disappointed that the original piano sound had disappeared. So then Korg made the original piano sound available in an Expansion pack that could be downloaded into the M3 Expanded. Attached is the "Stereo Grand 4-Way 3" downloadable piano for the M3 Expanded, which is the same as the original main piano patch "Stereo Grand 4-Way" on the original ("unexpanded") M3. I'm not 100% positive, but I believe it is also identical to the main piano patch of the Korg M50, which I believe had the same sound set as the original ("unexpanded") M3." ========== == NORD == ========== --------------------------- Nord Grand Imperial Bosendorfer mp3s: - http://www.mediafire.com/listen/s90vvus92clhg4k/dpbsd_nord_grand_imperial_bdorf_sml_on_electro_3.mp3 - http://www.mediafire.com/listen/w1duh6r7vpnuq5j/dpbsd_nord_grand_imperial_bdorf_xl_on_stage_2-76.mp3 Recorded by: "anotherscott": Notes: "This is the Small version of Nord's Grand Imperial Bosendorfer piano played through an Electro 3. This is the most minimal version of the Bosendorfer, with no string resonance of any sort. There are two larger versions which work on the Electro 3, which add sustain-pedal based string resonance, over either part of the keyboard, or the entire keyboard; otherwise, they are identical to this version. This was done on the regular Electro 3, not the new HP, which would have added an optional "long release" function. This is the Extra Large version of Nord's Grand Imperial Bosendorfer piano played through a Stage 2. This is the most complete version of the Bosendorfer, with both kinds of string resonance (pedal-down and key-down) over the entire keyboard, and more samples for less stretching (possibly separate for all 88 keys? I'm not sure, and I didn't listen carefully myself). This was done on a 76-key Stage 2 when the model first came out, and there was a bug (since fixed), whereby over MIDI, it would only play the same 76 keys that were in the range of the keyboard, so this is only a 76 note sample instead of an 88 note sample. Nord has also mentioned that this version on a Stage 2 has "dynamic crescendo" -- I'm not sure what that means, but someone in a forum said they think it means that, if you hit the same note repeatedly and harder with the pedal down, you'll get the kind of extra harmonic content that you get when doing that on a real piano. The funny thing to me is that this is much further from the "small" sample than I would have expected. In fact, although I only played them very briefly, I like the overall sound of the "small" better, as this one was more "dark." It could be the fact that they are essentially using a different sample set (more keys sampled on the XL), or it could be that the Stage 2 is not sonically identical to the Electro 3 when playing the same samples, or it could have been related to the fact that the Stage 2 has had numerous MIDI glitches that have gradually been addressed in subsequent updates, and perhaps it wasn't interpreting the MIDI data correctly... i.e. maybe the velocity mapping was off, such that at a given MIDI Velocity input, the Stage 2 was not responding the same way an E3 did, perhaps it was responding as if the key had been hit more softly, or something along those lines. But that's all just guesswork. All I can tell you for sure is that these files demonstrate what these keyboards sounded like when I ran the DPBSD file through them! I no longer have access to the Stage 2 to try running it again after their software updates, or to try Small version to see if that version sounds the same on the Stage 2 as it does on the E3, both of which would be interesting tests. Oh... I would have had the "Long Release" button enabled on the Stage 2 when running this. It is a nice feature. simulating the fact that, when a damper falls onto a string on release, you don't get an instantaneous full muting, and it does make it sound more natural to play." Review: TBA --------------------------- Nord Stage2 A01 1 Factory Bosendorfer XL mp3: http://www.mediafire.com/listen/ycc...dStage2_A01_1_Factory_Bosendorfer_XL.mp3 Recorded by: "Maxpiano": Notes: "The HW configuration is NS2 -> Behringer 1002 mixer -> Roland UA1G audio interface The audio was recorded and converted using Audacity, I tried to set recording level to obtain a peak as close as possible to -1 dB (as per your instructions) I am also a member of Nord User Forum and a lot of debate goes on there too about the Nord Piano Library samples, their pros and cons etc. My opinion is that they are good enough for the Nord Stage, seeing it as a combo instrument were Acoustic Pianos are just one of the components, but not good enough for Nord Piano (where they should be the core and have to compete with like instruments, i.e. Digital Pianos) All samples from Nord are nice but share a strange "mediosity" feeling, meaning they have a strange sound, too full in middle frequencies. While this characteristic allows those sounds to cut very well thru the mix in a band situation, it is quite annoying when playing piano solo and can only be partially mitigated using the on board Equalizer. I have also noticed that the output changes a lot depending on the audio output system used (headphones, studio monitors, PA and loudspeakers for live) The Imperial Bosendorfer is my favorite as to me it is the one with the more balanced sound among the Nord Piano Library Grand Pianos. Grand Lady D is the worse one with respect to having the mid freq. too present and Bright Grand is ok for pop/rock, but too thin, particularly in the middle/lower part of the keyboard The limited dynamic range is another problem as it limits the player expressiveness; I also observed that when playing "pianissimo" only the volume is reduced but you can't hear the timbral change you would expect from a real piano. Maybe a problem of not having enough layers? That's the reason why I use NS pianos when playing in a R&B, Soul, Pop band but I am not satisfied by them if I have to play Jazz (in trio or solo) or in general for playing solo at home: in that situation I am thinking to go for a VSTi such as Ivory II or Galaxy Vintage D." ============ == ROLAND == ============ --------------------------- Roland FP-80 mp3: http://www.mediafire.com/listen/wha1o12z69h07cf/dpbsd_v2.0_roland_fp-80_concert.mp3 Recored by "cmin". Notes: "All recordings were done as stated in the guide: Flat, no reverb, etc... then 192kbit MP3. I imported your MIDI file to Ableton Live and recorded the files directly from the piano to a USB stick in WAV on the piano itself. Absolutely no processing was done and the conversion only on digital level. As with the other Rolands in the bank, strangely the pedal noise could not be recorded using MIDI. So at the end of each recording I depressed the sustain pedal just so you could hear what it would be like." Review: TBA --------------------------- Roland HP-7 mp3: http://www.mediafire.com/listen/dvsv04fcoxrvwa4/dpbsd_v2.0_roland_hp-7.mp3 Recorded by: "Soren Jorvang": Review: TBA --------------------------- Roland V-Piano mp3: http://www.mediafire.com/listen/4inmmd87iqrrrli/dpbsd_roland_vpiano.mp3 Recorded by: "anotherscott": Notes: "I'm not so impressed with it. Everything is relative... my expectations are different on a VPiano than a Microstation... but bottom line is that, while it may be perfectly pleasant, I really don't think it sounds as much like a real piano as numerous other far less expensive DPs. I know it's much more tweakable, and you can create your own hybrid pianos unlike anything every actually manufactured, and there's no stretching and no looping, and all that is very cool. But simply, if I heard a recording of it, I would not be fooled into thinking I was listening to a real piano... there are other models that I think come closer to that, despite their technical limitations vis-a-vis the VPiano. I actually think Roland's older "Superior Grand" is better sounding than that default VPiano sound." Review: TBA ---------------------------

Notes: "These were recorded using V1.10 of the CP1 firmware. However, I also recorded the CF and S6 grands before updating the firmware (using V1.01), in case someone wants to compare the two. V1.10 is supposed to have some tweaks in the dynamics, but whether the CF and S6 are affected I'm not sure. V1.10 also has the new damper resonance setting, but I didn't use it for these recordings as I don't find it particularly interesting." "The CP80 sample is audibly inferior to the acoustic grands, which no doubt will be visible in a DPBSD analysis." Please, note that half or partial pedaling on N1 involves different values from the given ones in your MIDI-test. I checked a project of mine and the exact numbers that were recorded when the right pedal was pressed down are: 0, 4, 6, 12, 14, 20, 24, 35, 41, 50, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 63, 66, 68, 70, 72, 74, 76, 77, 79, 127 That was a slow piece, but for detailed test I should do something in very fast tempo. 02. The maximum velocity on N1 is not 127. At most 116 in lower register and at most 120 at highest. It is due to key bed. And those values are reached only by "karate" kicks. Normally 96-104 (low end) to 108 and a bit more at higher keys. The audio of Yamaha N1 was recorded via "Steinberg MI4" interface. The host was Cubase 7 for MAC." Hey dewster, it happens to everyone's life that conditions (and interests) change and you need to give space to some new things and as a consequence drop others. I wish to thank you for the good and hard work you did so far, setting a rigorous methodology and giving the community a lot of useful information on a very large number of products PS: with regards to the above post, I suggest that you also indicate the submission date of each item, so that also the comments will be put in the correct timeline (i.e. related to products available at that time, which may have changed)

You're right about the PX-5S, it's Hall2 in the reverb. Whatever that means, is Hall2 in the Casi PX-5S the same as Hall2 elsewhere?
Me on YouTubeCasio PX-5S. Garritan CFX, Production Grand 2 Gold, Concert Grand LE, AcousticSamples C7, some Sampletekks. Pianoteq 8 Std (Blüthner, SteinGraeber, NY/HB Steinway D).
