The link to this recording was forwarded to me by a fellow Piano World member who met the contestant in the audience at last year's Cliburn Competition:

http://www.cliburn.org/competitions/amateur-competition/amateur-video-contest/submit-video/#!/entry/7205870

I don't know Mr. Finlow, but I found this video to be very impressive (three short pieces by Scarlatti, Beethoven, and Prokofiev).

Making the first round cut is entirely based on online voting, not professional judging. If you like these renditions as much as I do, I hope you'll consider casting a vote for Mr. Finlow. Even if you don't vote, I hope you'll enjoy his video.

The recording was made at PianoCraft in Gaithersburg, MD on a Steingraeber E272. Mr. Finlow, who has performed on a lot of great pianos, calls it the finest instrument he's ever played. It sounds pretty good to me, though I am partial to Steingraebers.

his Prokofiev sounds A LOT like Richter's!!! He has got the perfect tempo, a blend of speed and steady drive, IMO. And he sure does sound good as an amateur! Great submission!

Thank you so much for posting this and for introducing me to the Piano Forum, which is great! WRT to the Richter reference, yes, Richter was my idol since childhood, though unfortunately my efforts to emulate him have always fallen short (not surprisingly). I had originally intended to take the Prokofiev quite a bit faster (more like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmuoQnnWjqY, with apologies for the blunder on the first page), but Russian artists know their Russian music (Ashkenazy's mature performance is very steady and controlled) and I just love the way the music creates its own momentum when the tempo is a tad slower than most non-Russians perform it (Pollini's performance seems like it's pushing the envelope from bar 1). So in the end it was a no-brainer.
