Hi, Everyone,

Hope you're all having a wonderful week. Our latest interview is with Juilliard dean, Ara Guzelimian, who's currently in the Bay Area to give a talk on the life and times of pianist Alice Herz-Sommer. I had the chance to speak with the former senior director of Carnegie Hall, and asked his thoughts on this generation's approach to music-making, Herz-Sommer, his time working with Isaac Stern, and the voices (composers) of today.

As always, thank you all for reading smile

A lot of the questions were about how to get people interested in classical music, if classical music is dying, and whether modern classical musicians are too much like robots.

I feel like he probably has much more interesting things to talk about.

I find it a little disheartening that he relies on name-dropping to make his points. Isaac Stern, James Levine, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Stephen Hough, and Herz-Sommer are all featured prominently, but with the exception of a few composers, he misses the opportunity to tell us what current faculty and recent graduates of Juilliard are doing.

"If we continually try to force a child to do what he is afraid to do, he will become more timid, and will use his brains and energy, not to explore the unknown, but to find ways to avoid the pressures we put on him." (John Holt)
