Welcome and great username btw smile Reminds me of the term I saw in a book review recently, "art monster" !
Probably you can get some good advice here. Any specific questions?

PL :

Your age doesn't really have anything to do with the question. More importantly : How long have you been playing? What other works have you played? How well do you play them? Do you have a teacher? What advice does s/he give?

One could give lots of "advice" on playing this piece, but unless you ask something more specific, that advice might not have much meaning.

It is a quantum leap from where you are to op.23 no.5.
Maybe a few years later.

There's absolutely no way of telling if you should or can play this piece. No way.

Having said that, we can help you with specific issues, that come across. Just be more specific!

Like any other piece.. practice it slow, so your fingers learn where to go and don't get too tense playing the huge cords and large stretches. It also helps you to hear the interconnections and practice dynamics, crescendos, inner voices, all of which are pretty important but often overlooked in Rachmaninoff.

Don't listen to too many recordings if you can help it. Many performers go heavy on the rubato with this piece, but if you try to replicate it yourself without getting the basics first, it's probably going to just fall flat.

There are a lot of leaps in the outer sections so even when you practice slow you want to move your hands very quickly to the next chord. One way to work on this is to start from one chord to the next, on the next chord move your fingers over the keys but don't play them until you are confident they are in the right place - only when you know its correct do you play the chord. The other way to work on leaps is the 'springboard'. Here you have you play a given chord and then move your hand as fast possible and hit the next chord. In this case you just go for it and don't wait for your fingers to be in the correct place.

For the middle section hands separate practice is helpful. Play the left hand slowly and make sure its even. There are some fairly awkward stretches so isolate these in practice and make them comfortable. The other challenge is voicing the melody line with the right hand playing big chords at a low dynamic. Make sure your pinky is ringing out and the musical line comes out instead of a series of vertical chords. Also make note that later in this section there are inner musical lines that need to be brought out. Its polyphonic music.

The Paul Barton tutorial is excellent too. I may have just repeated some of the ideas he talks about.

The video is good, but I would not rate it as excellent. For my money, he spent too much time playing rather than explaining what to do and how to do it.

I'm sorry you feel that way about my playing. I've spent a lot of time making free online piano tutorials - mainly responding to viewer's requests, over the last 6 years. In each video I tried to offer tips and encouragement to those that didn't have access to a piano teachers.

I deleted the video.

I love the video. Paul, why did you delete the video????

Your videos are excellent. The videos show how much thought that you put in creating them, and I believe MOST people appreciate what you have done (there are always people who have the urge to talk down). I watch your video again and again. Your videos really help on how to start learning new pieces.

Please put the Rach Op. 23 No.5 back.

Your videos are truly excellent and provide a great service. It is evident that you have invested a LOT of time in putting them together. BRAVO - and thanks !!

Why are you deleting the video just because I don't like it? My opinion should not be very important to you. And if every Youtube video that one person didn't like was deleted, there would be no videos left.
