I had this over in ABF and someone suggestion I'd get more help here... so here I am.
I got a new computer a while back and couldn't get the Silent feature (Yamaha) to record using audacity. I've been using the old laptop, but it really is on its last legs and I want to get set up on the newer one.
I have one jack which has no colour, but has an image of both headphones and microphones. When I look at the devices in the control panel it tells me I have an analog jack.
Today I tried recording with a real microphone (as in for karaoke) and it worked. However, when I connected the piano output to the computer nothing recorded.
Does that mean there is no way to record digitally using this jack?
If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it very much. Thanks

Try recording while not in Silent mode? On most digitals, the sound won't play through the speakers anyway, if you have something plugged into the output jack.

Thanks for your reply Hreichgott, but that's not the issue. I don't think I was clear enough in my question.
Let me try to clarify.
The Silent mode is a digital system added on to an acoustic piano. If I don't have it on, I'm playing a normal acoustic.
When I have the centre pedal engaged, a bar prevents the hammers from hitting the strings. I turn the switch on the digital box, and bingo, I have a digital piano.
There are 2 jacks on the Silent system. Both are output, I can wear headphones and record using either jack.
It works fine on my old computer which has a jack for input seperate from the output - (pink and green) - on the new computer I have only one jack and it won't work for taking input from the digital option on my piano.

is this a "windows" laptop, if so have you checked the sound control panel. "Line in" should selected as the default recording process as opposed to "microphone"

Cas... I don't know enough to definitely help you without the possibility of confusing the issue further. I can definitely suggest asking in the digital piano forum. Some people there really know their stuff.

@earlofmar - I'm using Windows 8.1 and there is no "line in" option I can find.....
@rnaple - good idea, I'll take my question over there.
Thanks guys.

I suggest you buy an USB audio card, even a cheap Behringer one, to provide your laptop a true Line-IN capability and most likely better A/D converters than the internal soundcard

Thanks Max. I found the Behringer on Amazon. Probably I can find it in an electronic shop too. On the Behringer I see L&R outlets for both input and output - my piano only has one output (well, there are two but they seem to do the same thing, I use one for listening and one for recording on the other computer). Am I going to need a split cable from the piano with L/R, or would I be able to just plug into one or the other on the Behringer? This is what my Silent system face looks like: (not my piano, just a pic I found on the net). Also, have I understood correctly that I could hook this up to my turntable or cassette player and record to the computer? That could be an unexpected bonus. I also found this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manhattan-1...-2&keywords=usb+audio+card+manhattanwhich says it is a sound adaptor, --it seems to me to be a simple split. Again, if I understand correctly - the Berhinger would enhance the audio recording/playback and the Manhattan would simply provide the inline option I'm missing. Is that right? Thanks for your help - and your patience!

Be carful when buying an adapter. That Manhattan is cheap. See the reviews. Behringer is known for not the best quality. If you want to keep price down and quality. I've heard good things about the Focusrites. I have a Pre Sonus Audiobox USB adapter. They're quite popular. It's ok. I would like better quality audio from a box of this type though.
Yes you can hook up anything to one of these boxes to input to your computer. EDIT: Look for the connections on the box. You'd like RCA jacks for the stereo. XLR, 1/4 inch, USB, and others. I think on mine the small 1/8inch is simply called headphone. You can get a good easy adapter for 1/4 to 1/8 or backward. A good box of this type will provide phantom power to microphone also.
EDIT2: Also be careful with a plug that is marked both headphone and microphone. I'm not sure how it's set up. I know you said it worked in one way. I know the iPad's have this and it's a three connection plug and special. All stereo plugs like this are two connections on the plug.

Thanks Ron. Yes, the Manhattan is cheap, I was just trying to get a verification on my understanding of what it was.
I had a look at the 2 brands you mentioned on Amazon and they are both cost significantly more than I feel comfortable with spending at the moment (well, possibly at any moment!).
At least I know what I have to look for now and I can do more research.
Thanks again!
Edited to add: all of the brands seem to have more than one model ---- so even more to explore!

If you just want to record some stuff for fun an external interface might be overkill. If you post the exact specs of your new computer (brand, model, etc.) we can surely help to identify what you need to record.

Hi Thomas - thanks. Really I just want a simple solution so I can record my piano music once in a while.
I have an ASUS Ultrabook, Series S56C, Intel Core i5-3371U CPU @1.70GHz 64bit Operating system, x64-based processor. I use Windows 8.1 as my operating system.
Is that enough info? If not, let me know specifically what is missing and I'll look for it.
Thanks.

First thing:
. . . The outputs from your piano (where you plug in headphones) are _analog_, . . . not digital. Don't get confused.
Second thing:
The electronic sound generator may produce "mono" sound, or "stereo" sound (different right and left channels).
In either case, the headphone jacks are 3-contact jacks ("ground", "left", "right").
To find out if the sound generator is "stereo" or "mono":
. . . put your headphones on "backwards" (left speaker to right ear), and play.
If the piano sounds different (more treble in the left ear, more bass in the right ear), the sound generator is "stereo". If it sounds the same, the sound generator is "mono".
The laptop jack is almost certainly a 4-contact jack:
. . . "Ground", "left heaphone", "right headphone", and "Microphone".
So the _first_ thing to do:
. . . Get an adapter that separates the "headphone" contacts (and "ground") into one jack, . . . and the "microphone" contact (and "ground") into another jack.
If the piano's sound generator is "mono", you should be able to feed it into the laptop's "microphone" jack, and record it.
If the piano's sound generator is "stereo", I suggest that you get some kind of USB-powered "external sound card" that has a "stereo" input (or separate "left" and "right" inputs). That will plug into the laptop's USB port, and you'll be able to use it as a signal source for recording software (e.g. "Audacity") on the laptop.
It's not really complicated -- but "the devil is in the details".

Thanks Charles. That was refreshingly easy to follow (I tried looking things up on websites and it was all so full of jargon I really didn't know what 90% of it meant!) OK, so the out put _analog_ from my piano IS mono. All I need to get my basic stuff done is a split. Thanks ever so much!

Thanks very much!

Glad you've got things working! Out of curiosity, what specific USB adapter did you use?

I got the Manhattan http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manhattan-150859...+card+manhattanGiven that my purpose is just to record for family and for the online e-citals, and that my playing skills aren't such that they merit a large financial investment this is a nice little solution for me.
