Good morning folks,

Kawai Japan has recently issued a software update for the ES7 portable digital piano.

This update (v1.15) improves damper resonance key balance and MP3/WAV audio recorder gain. There are also fixes to the operation of Dual mode, SMF playback, and a handful of other UI tweaks.

The full changelog is listed below by category:

Quote:
V1.15 (September 2014)

SOUND
- Improved: Damper Resonance key balance is now more even across the keyboard.
- Fixed: Holding keys with Dual mode selected, then returning to Normal mode, would cause the layered sound volume to increase.

RECORDER
- Improved: The default AudioRecGain value is now set to +9 dB.
- Fixed: A part of general SMF files could cause playback to stop unexpectedly.

MISC
- Improved: Various other operation/display improvements.

V1.14 (November 2013)

SOUND
- Improved: The overall key balance of the Concert Grand sound for greater consistency with neighbouring notes.

MIDI
- Fixed: Fine Tune messages were not always received correctly.

RECORDER
- Fixed: Some parts of SMF songs might not always playback correctly.
- Fixed: Changing songs did not reset the A-B loop position.
- Fixed: Stopping a recording before the end of a count-in would result in the tempo being displayed incorrectly.
- Improved: Various other recorder operations.

EFFECTS
- Fixed: Changing reverb settings of the Rhythm Section was slow.
- Fixed: Changing the Rotary speed while using the Rhythm Section was not always correct.

MISC
- Fixed: Turning off Stretch Tuning when exiting the menu was not always effective.
- Fixed: Prevent tone generator from creating ‘pop’ noise under certain circumstances.

V1.13 (October 2012)

PEDAL
- Improved: Added ‘F-20 Mode’ parameter to ‘Basic Settings’ menu.

With the correct pedal mode selected, this feature allows the included F-10H and optional F-20 pedal units to be combined for triple pedal (Damper, Sostenuto, Soft) functionality. For more information, please refer to the updated ES7 owner's manual, available from the Kawai Japan website.

RHYTHM SECTION
- Improved: When changing styles, the style number is now displayed for 2 seconds.
- Improved: Increased overall volume of Rhythm Section.
- Fixed: Some irregular chord forms were not detected correctly.
- Fixed: When recording with the Rhythm Section, some ending patterns may have been truncated.

MISC
- Improved: Various operation details.

V1.11 (July 2012)

SOUND
- Improved: The damper pedal response curve is now closer to that of a real concert grand piano.

MIDI
- Fixed: The default (power on) MIDI receive mode was changed to Omni On.
- Fixed: The sostenuto pedal MIDI command when multi-timbral mode is enabled.

MISC
- Improved: Various operation details.

V1.10 (June 2012)

SOUND
- Fixed: When Layer Dynamics is set to OFF, the layer sound's touch response was not disabled.

RECORDER
- Fixed: Internal recorder was not able to delete a part individually.

RHYTHM SECTION
- Improved: Changed chord detection when using Full Keyboard ACC Mode (e.g. Adding OnBass Chord).
- Improved: Display now shows additional chord types (e.g. 9, M9, m9, mM9, 7(b9), 7(#9)).

MISC
- Improved: Various operation details.
- Improved: Display now shows message when turning off power.
- Improved: Increase in overall volume.

Note that Kawai software updates are cumulative. I.e. the v1.15 update also includes the fixes and improvements of v1.11, v1.10 etc.

How important are these software updates? Do they make a big difference in playing/sound or only minor impact?

It really depends on the update and the fix/improvement. Some do make a big difference in how the instrument plays, while others just affect the operation of certain functions.

Either way, there's nothing to lose from updating, so it's generally recommended whenever a software update is issued.

Cheers,
James

The ES7's original software didn't have any serious problems when it shipped. The updates since then have eliminated a few bugs in the UI and a couple of anomalies in the tone generator. I'd say the cumulative effect has been to make modest improvements, but the ES7 didn't require any major improvements to begin with. I haven't noticed any big changes in sound or playability.

Greetings all....new subscriber and first time poster..!!
I am just getting to know my ES7 having purchased it at the end of December. Overall, it is quite an amazing instrument and I am enjoying it immensely.
Not a keyboard player by any stretch as guitar is my primary instrument but have an original Yamaha DX7 and a 1945 Weber acoustic that I have used for writing.
I checked the version of software it is running and I see it is V1.14.
I tried to access the web page quoted by Kawai James but get "page not found".
Question - are the software updates universal or would North America perhaps have a different version....?
I have been having a couple of intonation issues that are being addressed at Dealer/Tech level, but don't know if a software update would correct?
Thanks for any assistance and I have been following this board quite a bit - very interesting to say the least!!! lol..
Cheers!

Thank you Marko, I'll update the original post.

Riley67, congratulations on the purchase of your ES7.
To answer your query, the updates are not region specific - they will work regardless of the market in which the instrument was purchased.

Kind regards,
James

Thank you Marco & James......
If I could, just one quick question - will the ES7 update from the WinZip or must the files be opened and saved opened to the USB? (Sorry for my lack of all things "technical" - just my age showing....LOL!!!
Thanks again for assistance!

Riley67, you will need to uncompress the zip file, then copy the two files (ES07_040.SYS and ES07_380.SYS) to the root folder of your USB memory device.

Please refer to the ES7 update instructions on the webpage linked above.

Kind regards,
James
