I had just discovered Joe Hisaishi by chance last year when I was Youtube serched some music. What do you think about his music? If you have never heard of him before, please go to Youtube and search for his performance. I like his song named "Oriental Wind".

He is an amazing composer (one of my favorites) who composes primarily for film. Check out some of his film scores!

I think Joe Hisashi does a lot of soundstrack stuff for Ghibli. I know he composed music for "Spirited away". He is a great composer, but I have friends who has seen him perform live and they weren't too impressed with his piano playing... smile

I'm a big fan of his. His piano playing might not be the most amazing in the world, but his sense of musicality is out of this world.

I am a huge fan of his music, I've never heard him live though.

I have played a few of his pieces, right now I have Summer in my repertoire, and am working on Hana-Bi. Both of these pieces have solo piano and orchestrated versions, so if you decide you want some of his sheet music, you have to choose carefully.

He does film music, anime music, music for TV commercials in Japan and is basically an incredibly prolific composer. He did the music for Spirited Away, Kikujiro's Summer, Princess Mononoke, Laputs, Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro... And more.

BTW if you like Hisaishi, you might also like Ryuichi Sakamoto. I recommend Energy Flow, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, Put Your Hands Up, Tong Poo... For starters.

I have two Hisaishi recordings in my box.net account below, Summer (a piano arrangement of the orchestrated version) and A Town by the Sea, which I played too fast smile

Here is the version I'm working on of Hana-Bi, played by Hisaishi. IMO he plays it a little too fast here (it's slower on the CD) but if you listen to the scone half, you can hear why I fell in love with this piece!

And while we're at it, here's Ryuichi Sakamoto playing Tong Poo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsDcHm8d3KU&feature=youtube_gdata_player

The video is pretty bad quality (sound is great though) so I can't tell but he's either playing with a player-piano bass line, or there's an invisible bassist. Either way, you can get a feel for the piece, it's incredibly uptempo. I have the score and might start working on it this summer if I decide the tempo is not too much for me!

Interesting.. Ryuichi Sakamoto is a terrific piano player and composer too smile

Btw my comment about Joe Hisashi's piano playing doesn't take away his ability as a composer. Some people are good at composing, some are good at performance, some are good at both.

I absolutely LOVE Joe Hisaishi (even though, I must say, I basically only know his composition for Ghibli movies)
