Paul likes the reassurance and added legitimacy that responses from experienced members give to his new piano tuning business.

I never liked using a model. I know it helps, but IMHO it is wasted money. You may use it a few times to see how things work, but eventually you have to move to a real piano. You can't pick a piano up and move it around like you can a model. (Advantage maybe?)

My suggestions:
Find a receptive rebuilder/technician.
Buy an old grand. Make your own model.
Go to a rebuilder and see if he has a grand you can fool around with. (My friend in Montreal is always helping people out who have an interest.)

Ok, thanks Mark.

Someone had recommended an action model, but if/when I get
another piano, that's gonna be the test bed anyways.

I'm planning on shopping for a piano today....maybe I'll ask
if they need help.....

I saw one at a music store that was broken and lying in a corner. I got it for free just for asking.
Fixed it easy...
Have it to this day...
Just looks great on the shelf.

Ask, and ye shall receive!

I'll try it, thanks!
