Well, we've lost another great, innovative jazz icon - Mr. Joe Sample. To this day, I still listen to the Jazz Crusaders and my all time favorite, "Carmel", one of his great solo releases along with "The Pecan Tree." He will certainly be missed along with a long list of other innovators who brought originality to the work of jazz.

Rest in peace, Mr. Sample

Amen to that. Great pianist. I've transcribed a few of his solos over the years

This is very sad news indeed. May he rest in peace.

I just learned of Joe Sample's death last night. He was my favorite jazz composer bar none. I saw him in concert three times. The first time at the Bottom Line in this small and intimate venue where I sat just a few feet from the piano. This was after his release of the Rainbow Seeker album. I never saw a more enthusiastic audience anywhere. The second time I walked to the stage with two friends after the concert was over and struck up a conversation with a stage hand who invited me backstage to meet Joe. Joe was sitting off to the side of the stage by himself and having an after concert drink. I introduced myself but when my friend said that he heard Joe's music when I played it on the piano Joe had us sit and we talked for quite awhile. We talked about music and I suggested he do a live album. He definitely liked the idea. It was a most interesting talk and I will always cherish the memory of my visit with the great Joe Sample.

Joe's solo starts at 3:40, such a soulful pianist has left us.
