You need cross-rhythm scales.

What are those?

One hand plays a 4 octave scale in 16ths while the other plays a 3 octave scale in triplet 8ths. The hands line up every beat.

If it's hard to do a scale right off, one can start by playing for example RH in 16ths CDEFGFEDC while LH in 8th triplets CDEFEDC, lining up on the Cs and on the high note F/G.

And like Faris said, you can do these in 2 vs. 3 too.

Thanks

Thanks everyone!

Carbonblob, thanks a lot. I watched those videos and I can see that this method (also mentioned by Heather - thanks!) will probably do the trick. You guys never cease to impress! Thanks you again, and good luck with the piece blob. If I find that this is going to take TOO much time to get it as perfect as possible, I might shelf it for next year and switch it with Bach's 5th french suite which I've been wanting to play for a while now.

you might want to try exercises 1a and 1b from here:

It did help me to get it done.

I found that a way to practice any rhythm that is n/ n+1 (3/4, 5/6, 10/11, etc) is to just do the following:

Assume the RH plays 6, and the left hand plays 5 for example.

Start by playing both hands together. The alternate between the hand with more notes, and the one with fewer.

So for 6/5:

BOTH - RH - LH -RH - LH - RH - LH - RH - LH - RH | BOTH - etcetc

As your hands become more fluent, the placement will become more precise.

Working on:
Chopin - Nocturne op. 48 no.1
Debussy - Images Book II

Thanks for the feedback Pover.

I think you're going to go far! I'm self taught too. I didn't care if I had to learn one measure at a time, I was going to learn original pieces and not the easy versions.......lol.

This isn't about me so I won't bore you with my journey but I will say I admire anybody capable of learning the FI who is also self taught. I think that's a monumental accomplishment made all the more amazing by tackling this only 3 years in, wow!

I expect to hear your recital one of these days! Good luck........blob
