Hey Everyone!

Still fairly new to this forum, i'm currently studying jazz at Auckland university in NZ.

I got a repertoire jury assessment in about 4 weeks as well as a transcription due soon, looking for some new music to play and listen to, hoping some of you guys can help me out.

I really want to find some modern compositions and players, early this year i've transcribed Wynton Kelly, Hank Jones and Lennie Tristano. I really wanna find a modern pianist, i'm really into my quartal voicings right now, side stepping, 'outisde' playing.. really digging sus13b9 chord substitutions on dominants. I'm pretty good with my theory and have been using it to apply to my playing, but I actually haven't heard much or listened to this style of playing.

I want to find some tunes to play that have interesting chord sequences, ie not 2 5 1s, we do a lot of that in my day to day to stuff at uni, and this assessment gives me a chance to choose and arrange 2 tunes, wanna pick some cool stuff, been digging some wayne shorter lately, "Speak No Evil" the whole album, really like "Dienda" by Kenny Kirkland, and really into some Robert Glasper,

Hope some of you guys can help me find some tunes and music to listen to, and potentially links to lead sheets for less well known tunes?

Cheers,

Since you mentioned Glasper...

Try some Esbjorn Svennson Trio stuff or some Brad Mehldau perhaps for some interesting arrangements of popular music. Both very unique styles.

There is SO much that it's hard to know where to start, but a few off the top of my head:
Passion Dance by McCoy Tyner. It's got quartel stuff in the head. McCoy pretty much invented quartel voicings.
Dolphin Dance by Herbie Hancock: A classic tune with odd harmonic movement.
One Finger Snap by Herbie Hancock - my teacher had me transcribe some of this solo. It's modern, wild and amazing.
Wildflower by Wayne Shorter has your phrygian chord (sus13b9) built right in.
Chick Corea: Now he Sings, Now he Sobs - the whole CD; it's a highly influential modern playing CD.

Oh there is so much more!
