A student of mine broke her right wrist recently and will be limited to playing with only her left hand for several weeks. Mom wants her to continue her lessons during that time.

Has anyone faced a similar situation and do you have ideas for keeping lessons fun and productive with left hand only?

BTW...she is at the Early Intermediate/Intermediate level, just having started the Faber 3B books.

Your student might benefit from this book, or a book from the same series:

You can always work on theory and ear training, too.

I would take this as an opportunity to upgrade the dexterity of the left hand. The right hand is favored throughout the piano literature, naturally, and the left hand is not developed as thoroughly as the right hand unless a pianist goes to extra lengths. Years ago when I had a fractured bone in my right arm, and I devoted that time to improving my left hand technique.

All manner of simple exercise could be worked on (you can make these up) as well as those few pieces that give the right hand plenty of exercise.

Beyond that you can devote much of the lesson to firming up the basics of theory, as well as expanding her range of listening to and discussing many great examples of the music literature.

It could be a really great time for some ear training with pop songs. Find a song she likes that has a limited number of chords, and learn to play the chords, or maybe just a single-note bass line, recognizing the chord changes by ear. She could have fun playing along with a recording.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I have ordered the Alfred book, which I think she will enjoy. I'll also spend some time doing ear training which I try to do every week but with a 1/2 lesson we often run out of time, and find some left hand technical exercises for her to work on.
