I've about to buy digital piano and have narrowed my choice down to a Roland HP504 or a Yamaha CLP535. Based on touch and piano sound, which would people recommend?

Thanks in advance for any help! smile

Have you play-tested both instruments?
If so, which did you prefer?

Not to add to any confusion, but have you looked at Kawai as well? One of their newest keyboards, the CN35 really hits on all cylinders (and the CN25 as well), combining great action and sound. Myself, I'm biased towards the Roland and the Kawai, but you'll have to make your own choice based on your own trials.

Thanks for the replies so far - please keep them coming!

When I tried both instruments, I preferred the sound of the Yamaha but my daughter (who's learning) preferred the touch of the Roland. The problem is that I'm not a pianist (although I want to learn) and don't know what I'm looking for. Is there a general consensus that one scores more highly than the other?

I realise that the Roland has more tech and is iPad-friendly; however, I don't want to be dazzled by that. Rather, I want the digital piano that will work best as a substitute for an acoustic piano i.e. will sound closest to and feel most like a real piano when you sit down at it. In truth, neither of them sounded as good to my ears as my friend's 12-year old Yamaha CVP103; however, I'm told that, given advances in technology, both the CLP535 or the HP504 should trounce the CVP-103!

Kawai's not an option for me, as there are no dealers near me and I want to buy locally.

If your daughter is taking lessons on an acoustic, be guided by her opinion on the touch. Sound can always be 'improved' using software if one must.

I haven't played the CLP-535, but I can say that the HP-504 is a fine instrument, and it's a clear winner over the previous generation of CLPs in terms of both touch and sound. You can't go wrong buying the Roland.

Ah, that's unfortunate, however I can appreciate your desire to purchase from a local dealer.

Assuming you are not in the US, may I ask where you are based?

Kind regards,
James

Okay, I see.

There are a handful of Kawai digital piano dealers in Scotland [MAP], however unfortunately, not in every city.

Kind regards,
