Greetings, does anyone here follow or listen to Benny Green's recordings? I would be interested in your impressions.

Many thanks-

benny green is one of the best straight ahead players on the scene. i especially like his many recordings with ray brown. there is an artist transcription book available of his playing too.

an anecdote, which is when i was in nyc benny green used to be "there" more or less with johnny o'neil. which is to say he learned a lot from johnny o'neil. bg's long since been one of the great jazz pianists.

johnny o'neil's the pianist in the ray charles movie (with jamie lee fox) who plays art tatum

I tune his piano. We went to the same elementary school, although I was about a dozen years ahead of him. He is a real nice guy.

Thanks for your comments folks. I like what you call 'Straight-ahead jazz.' However, I recently had to look up that phrase to see exactly what it means—now I know.
I caught whiff of Benny Green on our local jazz radio, got his most recent record in hand, and am enjoying the consumption of it. It goes very good with this Canadian Whiskey I am drinking.

Best regards-

His playing of parallel octaves would make Oscar proud.

For those interested in Benny Green, I highly recommend the Piano Jazz episode where he was the guest: http://www.npr.org/event/music/355112524/benny-green-on-piano-jazz It's a good way to learn about his background and hear is playing.

Benny Green is one of the greatest jazz pianist in the world. But he seems to have never developed his own original "voice". He sounds like others...

Benny Green is great, but the problem is I end up comparing him to one of Ray Brown's other main pianists Gene Harris. Not fair!
