Can't get the Vimeo to play here....wondering if PW can add Vimeo to the Media Tag button?

Nice composition and playing, reminds me of Ravel/Debussy....the piano....hmmm...tuning?? This MIM looks to be a great place for learning etc about all kinds of musical instruments.

That was *beautiful*, GP! Thanks for sharing this link.

If I'm not mistaken, one of our regular PW members is a docent at the MIM. Perhaps he ("carey") can tell us some more. grin

I wonder how they care for all of their instruments. Apparently, they have a bunch. And, something tells me it ain't easy to keep a lobby piano in tune... wink

Hey Andy,

Thanks....what a great place to learn about all kinds of musical instruments. Great, would like to hear more about the MIM, and their collection of pianos.

Take a look at the famous Roger Williams playing there...what a wonderful pianist he was in that genre ...a short vid...what kind of piano is that? I can't make out the fallboard logo. A bit bright sounding, could be the acoustics/vid recording, but a wonderful singing sustain in the treble. I like its retro-look of the 1930's.

Grandpianoman -

Andy invited me to chime in on this thread. grin

I've volunteered at the MIM since it opened in April 2010.

The Steinway B in the lobby gets quite a workout (or perhaps "beating" is the more appropriate term) since it can be played by anyone. It is on loan to the MIM from our local Steinway dealer. I've played it several tines myself - although I'm not particularly nuts about the touch. This piano - and the two 9 foot concert grands in the MIM theater (Steinway and Yamaha) are maintained by the same tech who tunes/regulates my home piano. Obviously it was overdue for a tuning when the video was made.

The piano that Williams performed on in the video was his own personal instrument that was custom built for him by Steinway many years ago. I remember that 12 hour marathon 85th Birthday celebration concert of October 2010 quite well - since I was working in the galleries that morning. We had over 2,000 folks go through the museum that day. Williams would play for about 40 minutes - then take a 20 minute break. I believe the video was taken as he was warming up the day prior.

Happy to answer any other questions you might have about MIM.

Best -

Carey

Hi Carey,

Thanks for joining the conversation!

Lol...I can understand the B getting played a lot. Even though it needed a refreshed tuning, it still sounded good. Since I learned how to tune pianos, am more sensitive to tuning, and a bit more critical. smile

Ahh ok...William's private piano...great looking and sounding piano. Is there a video of any of his playing during the birthday marathon?

What a great idea to have a museum of musical instruments, was not aware of it before now. Continued success!
