I just joined a new local music meetup group (8 people so far including keyboards, guitar, bass, sax, etc) that plays a wide variety of music including jazz standards, show tunes, pop/rock, etc. The organizer asked for ideas on songs to play, especially ones that don't have too many chord changes, so I thought of "Route 66". Does anyone else here play this one? I like to play it with some kind of walking bass, but need some more ideas on improv, etc. .

ROUTE 66

It is not surprising that you have not received a response so far: You are asking about arrangement for band, but forum for pianists. Route 66 is a blues, blues, and each blues can be converted to the rhythm- and- blues, thus e.g.:

I've actually gotten some nice helpful PMs from people, ideas on improvising (for solos), using the bebop scale for the blues, etc. Thanks again to Karen and Mike. smile

Listen to the band "Asleep at the Wheel" with their great piano player "Floyd Domino" and transcribe his work with that song.

Thanks rocket88.. I don't like to be a copycat with anything, but the more tips the better. smile I have no trouble playing boogie-woogie and the blues scales, so I think that'll sound very good with this song, Route 66.. thumb
