This is the place where you can put your drafts, experiment, exercises, ideas and other rejected or unfinished pieces into their final rest.

The idea is that others might rummage around here, scavenging bits and pieces, or reproduce exercises.

Throwing in this exercise, I've render it in both oboe and clavier to show the difference between the human voice and an instrument (ie, I think it suits the oboe better due to the instrument being nearer the human voice).

Finally I've made something that feels a little bit coherent throughout ( I'm struggling with the form / structure ).
Though it really lacks in the harmony department, it pretty much stays on the tonic.

I was thinking this thread could contain materials for reuse. Safe for stealing so to speak.

But I'm thinking of putting the exercises in another thread; because I have an idea of sixth and seventh species containing cadence and imitation exercises. I'll put up an example as soon as time permit.

Yes, and why would anybody want to reuse a failed exercise?

Is it the thread name that make you write fail? If so I have been thinking of renaming the thread "The Recycle Bin", but for that to happen somebody must first recycle something

You use the terms "rejected and unfinished" - which signals to me that the things in here are not of very high quality.

You have a point. I've tried to raise the bar little by my two last submission by posting a whole set of exercises, rather than a single random exercise. That way someone else could follow along the species and try it out using the sole CF (or go through my CPT and check for rule-breaks/licenses).
Further, should I post a single random exercise it would contain some musical value or something else that qualifies it for posting.

Since you were being rather unnecessarily slammed for daring to post ... I decided to risk a YouTube contribution and check out your work. I have become innured to awful dissonant junk "composed" by people with no musical experience beyond something offered in a computerized music writing program for would be "pop" musicians.

So your work was a refreshing surprise. I loved the richness you managed to evoke with only two voices at a time ... and your adherence to the contrary motion of the voices proves that the Baroque masters had their stuff correct.

I am a bit of a mystic ... and am submerged in the Baroque era even as I compose for today's students. And I believe in serenditpity and coincidence. Last week I received a request to write some music for a church youth choir. Which amused me vastly since I'm a Hindu and although I studied four part harmonies many years ago, have forgotten almost everything I was so laboriously taught. I had to print out an online guide to get myself up and running.

But your lovely contribution here has put wind under my sails. Thank you!

I would scold you for only one thing .... never consider anything you create as "garbage" ... nor toss it into a "bin". It's "Composer's Files". OK?

I've been reusing stuff that I wrote 20-30 years and I just hope that I won't run out with my "failed" attempts (which now, with my experience they sound wonderful).

It made me reschedule and complete my next exercise.
I call it cadential species because it is about working with cadences.
It is still a bit of a haste-work, but I need something to work on on the other hand.
The cadence formulas is what I've gathered from books, so they should be correct, but I may either
misinterpret them, or misuse them, because in alot of places there isn't that "feel" of cadence.
Perhaps 2-3 preparatory bars are to little for the ear to adjust before going into cadence ( a hint of this was that note-against-note didn't feel enough to suffice the ear ).

What Nikolas & pianomuse said is spot on..in the bin so to speak. As composers it's a good practice to cherish whatever ideas that we have brought forth even though we may perceive them as trash. All things are made from trash to begin with anyways.

The first 10 pieces I've ever put on youtube was pieces that I've thrown in the bin back in my highschool days and what I found is that what you find garbage maybe food for other's ears...I reached this enlightenment when I saw a fly eating my garbage .
