I have some friends who are looking at a brand new GP169 and were quoted 25K USD with Tax. Does that seem to be a high going average, or is it a good deal?

Thanks in advance!

Kevin,

The GP169 comes in many models. The 169T (traditional) in ebony has the lowest list price. The 169DE (diamond edition) has a fancier case. And nicer veneers add even more.

I don't have this year's price supplement by Larry Fine, and you should think about acquiring it. According to last year's edition (and I'm sure prices are higher now) 25k with tax is more than 30% off the list price for a 169T. That would qualify as a nice deal in my book.

Best,

David F

Thanks David, my friends are considering this Schimmel model over a 1-year old Shigeru Kawai SK5 that was involved in an insurance settlement.

This particular Shigeru was involved in a fire, but appears to have suffered no "apparent" damage.

However, even at about a foot less in length, the Schimmel's sound and action appeals to them better.

Even at 2.5k more, they are feeling a bit more comfortable with buying a new piano versus one that was involved in a fire.

Sounds like the dealer is giving them a very good deal.

Thanks for your time.

Kevin

Kevin,

A fire?! As they say in Monty Python, "Run away! Run away!"

I thought the moisture content of the wood in a piano is critical. What would a fire do to this? Is the warranty still good?

A Shigeru in a fire is almost as intriguing as a Bosie in hotel room... but I agree with treeman that your friends have reason to shy away from it, first and foremost because they liked the Schimmel better.
