The reason I asked is because when people play a triplet, which are "faster" notes than quarter or eighth notes, it is relatively easy to speed up the tempo of the entire phrase (or piece) because the faster triplet notes "kick" the tempo up for a moment, and if you are not careful, up goes the tempo from that point on.

I have a metronome. (I often wish I had not). I will use it more.

All those techniques sound good. Thank you.

I don't mean that you should play through the whole piece using the metronome, just use it to check in and establish a consistent tempo for all the sections, easy and hard.

+1, especially for popular music. The few things I play are all ones that I wanted to play because I'd heard them many times before. It would be tough to find something I'd want to play that I've never heard.
