I just read the CA97 user manual. I can't think of anything negative to say about it. Looking forward to read what others think.

I assume the CA-67 does not have the "sound board" (even if it is little more than a gimmick), since they did not mention it in the video? Seems like the 2 pianos are nearly identical, as far as piano sounds/tweaking, speakers, and keyboard?

I read the specifications of the CA97 on the KAWAI website , but never understood what the Grand Feel II differs from the Grand Feel action. All description applies also for Grand Feel.

I'm curious how that sound board is driven. I would expect them to use exciters instead of speakers to make that sound board vibrate similar to how a piano bridge might.

I believe you're right.
The CA65 had 60 sounds and 100 watt speaker system and the
and CA95 had 80 sounds and the 135 watt speaker/soundboard system.

The CA67 has listed as 6 speaker system instead of 4 on the CA65.
I can't find the Wattage listed. The european site has the specs listed
for the CA97 on both the CA67 and CA97.

They look nice. Wonder when they will be available in the USA.

Correct, although the speaker system has been upgraded compared to the previous generation CA65.

Yes, the keyboard action and sound engine specifications are the same, however there are more sounds on the CA97 (80 vs 60). The soundboard speaker system and single-piece cabinet are the main differences.

Kind regards,
James

As I wrote earlier I have read the CA97 user manual. Just go to the Kawai website and you can download it. The specifications for both pianos are there.

Hi James, could you confirm us that the upgrade of the Grand feel II is the counter weight system? Is the GF2 same length of GF1 by the way? About sound is the same Harmonic Imaging XL same sample size?
Thank you in advance for your kind contribution.

I think the biggest difference is the "ebony feel" black keys. I'm pretty sure the GF already has graded hammers and counterweights - although I guess they may have tweaked the weighting a bit.

As mentioned in the 'New Kawai CA series?' thread, the GFII action offers the following improvements over GF:

- Ebony Touch black key surfaces
- More authentic key width and edge camber for black keys (based on SK-EX specification)
- Richer colour for black keys
- Moisture absorbency for black keys
- Revised hammer shape and weight (optimised centre of gravity, improves dynamic load)
- Counterweights on all 88 keys, graded from bass to treble
- Improved note-on timing, with ability to trigger notes from the let-off point

Yes, GFII key length and key pivot length is the same as GF.

The CA97/CA67 'EX Concert' sound is the same as the CA95/CA65 'Concert Grand' sound, and the 'SK-EX Concert' and 'SK-5 Grand' are brand new. All three sound sets are HI-XL 88-key sampled.

I hope this answers your queries.

Cheers,
James

Overall these pianos sound quite impressive. I'd love to test out the new Shigeru samples and key action in person - even more so as an owner of an unsampled Shigeru... wink

PS. As a member of Club Red I'd love to see a nice Shigeru sample in the Nord Piano Library as well. Apologies for a silly question, but: any chance to set up a cooperation?

I know - but on the (German) Kawai website it states that the tweeters on the CA-97 are 5cm as opposed to the 1.4cm tweeters of the CA-95. In the manual however both specifications are the same (1.4cm), so I guess the website is wrong. From the website CA-97 specs:

"Resonanzboden System plus 4 x 7cm Top Speaker und 2 x 5cm Kalottenhochtöner"

That's why I asked. To sum it up , the CA-97 has introduced :

- some improvements over the GF keybed,
- two brand new AP piano sample sets,
- ditched a few very old piano sets from the earliest Kawai's (?) ,
- added some 'crossover' headphone functionality
- introduced undamped string resonance and cabinet resonance
- easier VT navigation and setup and iOS app support

I am very curious to the length of the new sample sets ; it's HI-XL, but does that mean the samples are of equal length to the samples of the concert grand in the CA-95 or perhaps longer ?

And will the new resonance effects fix some string resonance artifacts that are present in the previous series (although hardly noticeable!). And will these resonance give the release stage of the sound a more natural / dynamic decay ? I mean - will these effects 'mask' the looping stage of the sound as a by-effect ?

The enhanced GF , headphone effects and new samples alone won't make me exchange my 95 for a 97 yet, but if the added resonance effects provide for a less static sustain phase of the new and existing samples , that might change...

Cherio, J

Sorry but it was an error on the page (is corrected now)...Official Statement of KAWAI > The Hardware base is the same CA95 and CA97 (loudspeakers).

The cabinet and undampend string resonance was always part of the HI XL harmonic Imaging.

Only this two effects can now be adjusted in the new menu, because some People don't liked it.

If I may correct you, 'Harmonic Imaging' relates to the playback and interpolation of samples throughout the dynamic range. It is not related to the modelled resonances.

This is incorrect. 'Cabinet Resonance' and 'Undamped String Resonance' are new modelled resonances, accessible and adjustable via the instrument's Virtual Technician feature.

Kind regards,
James

Hi,

I ordered the black Version of the CA97. Delivery seems to be next week or maybe in 2 weeks.

I will get mine from my local dealer.

The cost here in Germany is Euro 3.400,- delivered (US$ 3.900,-)

They look nice. Wonder when they will be available in the USA.
[/quote]

I spoke with Kawai USA last week and they told me that both the 67's and 97's should start showing up in dealer showrooms by mid to late March but there is a caveat to that estimate... It depends on how fast they can clear the backlog at the west coast ports. There could be a substantial delay.

I messed around with the CA97 at the showroom in Tokyo last week. I only played for a few minutes and couldn't tell a difference between the GF1 and GF2, but I did notice right away that the sound was much better on the CA97 than on the CA95's speaker system. I was underwhelmed on the CA95 and was satisfied when I got the MP11 instead (other important factors played in as well), however, the choice would have been much harder if the CA97 was in the mix.

The MP11 was announced at NAMM 2014 and remains one of the most realistic stage pianos available today. The announcement of the CA97/CA67 in January does not change this fact.

Kind regards,

You have a good point James. I'm not implying the MP11 isnt good and still isnt a fantastic stage piano, but I would have preferred it to have what the CA97 has if it had a synchronized release date since I was looking for the keyboard and sound without the frame

Yes an upgrade to the quite recent MP11 and MP7 with the new Shigeru samples of the CA67 would not only great for the customers, who recently bought one, but also great for the reputation of Kawai. The resulting good word of mouth across the globe would be worth millions in advertising money!

I agree. Unfortunately this is not possible.

I think you may be slightly over-estimating the size of the digital piano industry...
