My wife decided to start playing piano again and we went looking for a new piano for the first time last night. My wife likes Kawai as she used this as a child, but we have yet to try the new ones out. We both liked the Petrof 125, but the dealer was asking over $9,000 for it and claiming it was on sale. The Bluebook retail price appears to be $7,500.

Can someone provide us with a reputable dealer on Long Island (New York) and a good price for the Petrof 125?

Also, how does the Kawai K-25 or K-50 match up with the Petrof and what would be good prices for these?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Standard advice to new shoppers: Get "The Piano Book" by Larry Fine (there's a link on this site), and get the pricing supplement, also.

There are other pianos you need to consider, besides just these two, although both the K50, and the 125 are nice pianos (I like the 125 a bit better musically, the Kawai has better build quality, IMO).

I don't know what are average prices in Long Island, but in Boston area, $9000 is way too high for Petrof 125, around here it would be around $6000. But I agree, there are numerous other brands you should consider in addition If you haven't already:

Yamaha
Charles Walter
Schulze Pollmann
Pramberger Platinum edition

Yep -closer to $6000 would be a good price in California - I think - for a 125 - unless it has some special finish ?

You should get to Altenburg in NJ (5 minutes from Staten Island) They have lots of verticals in stock including Petrof. They carry fine veticals like Foerster and Sauter and Kemble as well, so you can compare Petrof with premium models. I was there yesterday and played a Pleyel vertical which I thought was very nice - I haven't played a vertical in ages and was quite surprised how nice this was. I think the Pleyel was around $8k (I wasn;t shopping for one, so I may be wrong on the price).

Thanks for the information. It looks like the lowest price we can negotiate in the area is $6,500 for the Petrof 125 and $8,900 for the Petrof 131. We really don't want to go too far out of our area for the purchase, so we may settle for one of the two. One place wouldn't go lower than $7,500 for the 125 and $10,300 for the 131.

Stay away from Petroff and buy the Kawai models you have suggested. The Kawai seasoned much better for our climate. You'll have far less service issues.

Are you 4 "million dollar piano salesmen" or 1 "4 million dollar piano salesman"??

Also, in the interest of balanced (read "correct") information, neither the Kawai nor the Petrof will have any particular problems because of climate, unless you plan on putting them in a rain forest.

Full Disclosure - I carry neither piano presently, but know them both well.

If going to Altenburg,check on the Pleyel.

If in your budget,they would be my own first choice.

And a Kemble [Yamaha] is a good piano too.

[In fact, I always have liked these English made versions somehow better.]
