I've been looking into the Kawai RX pianos and finally got a chance to play the RX1. My question is this: When I played a loud note (or notes) in the base, I first heard an quick, almost "cardboard" sound. The dealer just got that piano in and hasn't worked on it yet, but didn't really hear the sound either. I felt it with my fingers as I pressed down quickly as well.

On a similar subject, I recently tried out a 30 year old Baldwin M with new strings, soundboard, but not new hammers. When I press slightly on the keys, and use the damper, the keys jerk a little. It was disconcerting, so I didn't buy it, but I really wanted to like that piano. The tech said that it was probably due to very hard, original felt, and that it was easily fixed. I didn't want them to go through the trouble, however, until I tried out more pianos. Any thoughts on whether the felt is the only problem there?

New soundboard and old hammers?

I should mention that the tech also said that I might be feeling "the old parts playing against the new parts". Based on the reaction of Wynne, it doesn't sound like a good combination.
