Elssa, good work as always on Autumn Leaves, a song that never disappoints. It seemed as if you were reluctant to let it come to an end - one more little flourish at the end, than another - and that's OK - that is what Autum is all about, not wanting summer to be over!

My piece this month is Just Friends, by John Klenner, with lyrics by Sam M. Lewis. This is a song from the 30s which has become a jazz standard. It was not particularly well known till Charlie Parker recorded it and demonstrated how well the chord progressions work for bebop improvising. After that it was picked up and recorded by many jazz instrumentalists and several vocalists. I am playing from a lead sheet. The accompaniment (bass, percussion) is from a backing track which was provided to me.

Just Friends

The bar is really quiet this month.

Ellsa, I liked your sense of time on this one. Very effective.

Riddler, this one is full of life.

Here is my contribution for this month. I haven't had much success improvising on Honeysuckle Rose. I have been working on Bartok's Bagetelle n.2 and came up with the sick thought of of using the start of the Bartok against Honeysuckle Rose. I think the result feels a little like Debussy.

Honeysuckle Rose?

This post isn't about a song to be posted.
It's more a story, which I like to tell stories, ...true ones if I can. and post's are about revealing too. So Here goes....
Geronimoooooooo

About a week ago, I was asleep in my bed, which is in an upstairs makeshift apt of an old house where I grew up.....
Anyway it's a long tale, I left and "sort of" came back, over 2 years ago, and I am now almost wholeheartedly here "as home" , if that makes sense to anyone.

At about 4am in morning , I heard a loud bang and maybe movement, not a shot but more like someone was downstairs moving , in my house.
I got out of bed, and panicked, I didn't know if I should unlock my kitchen door and look down the steps to investigate.
But, I decided to call 911 emergency for police.

I hated doing this, because I had tools, and just general mess in the downstairs that I lacked the motivation to clean during the winter. (no heat there )
But I also valued my life so , I called.
The responder asked me if I had checked the lower floor to see if there was danger, which I responded "well ,no I'm too afraid, Can you get the police?"

"Of course" she said , took my address and hung up .

It took about a five mins in time, and they were there .
I went downstairs and opened the door, somewhat embarrassed, dressed in sweats and a jacket, (there's no heat on the downstairs floor )
The lighting was dim , and I neglected in the anxiety to turn on the downstairs room lights , so they used their flashlights.
One cop, noticed the Grande piano ,played a couple keys , but I followed the other cop who went through the downstairs.

Entrance

Finally he came to the back rooms where there was an addition added a very long time ago, separate from the main home, with a roof leak, that I and a brother fixed just recently .
The plaster had fallen from the side of the wall as well as a damaged cupboard that leaned from water damage and plaster floor mess .

Well,.... he saw that, and called his partner back .....
They both looked and said , "well, what did you hear?"
"A bang", "it awoke me" "it seemed just below my bedroom ."

He walked forward to living area and checked other doors and then said " Would you like me to check anywhere else?"
"No " I said, ...then they left... and I thanked them for coming.
BUT, I felt diminished by the house , by the back addition which I am NOT posting a picture at the moment.

But all in all it was good ....I started cleaning out the downstairs ....

So ... environment does make a difference....................

to see what they saw, look at the the pics , imagine it dark though.

And if there's a moral to this ,, you tell me.

But I think I might just be trying to justify/undo the mess they saw by posting here.
Don't know...

Just wandering into the bar here now after another bad snowstorm and having a bad case of cabin fever...

Ed, I really liked your upbeat and creative playing and arrangement of "Just Friends". smile
Your excellent drummer here was kind enough to offer to play with me while I noodle around on the piano in the bar..

Welcome to the Bar, Agfinguy. smile

I really enjoy the Bar... a great casual place to just have fun and post whatever you feel like. I guess a lot of people are like me, work full time and don't have a lot of free time, so don't feel a need to be "perfect" here.. Just post whatever you're doodling around with - anything goes here, whatever level or style. grin

Stumbler: Love the crazy creative chords in your recording. thumb

I haven't touched my piano in over a month. Just lost motivation I guess.
The other people in the house have been playing Minecraft on the Xbox and some of the music got into my head, and I just played a short piece! Annoying game, great music!

Thanks, LarryShone. I haven't been playing much either lately but just thought I'd stop into the bar here again and try to thaw out a bit. Will this winter weather never end? eek

Here's another piece I came up with. This time I used the chorus setting and played with damper pedal throughout.

Stumbler, your Bartokization of Honeysucke Rose was quite interesting, and quite listenable! What an inventive approach - I can't help but wonder how Bartok would have reacted!

Elssa, enjoyed your Night and Day, always a fav for me. Good intro, and I thought it was very clever the way you switched to a Latin style at the bridge..

Lean to tail, that was quite a long and involved composition, very musical, and played with real gusto!

Piano primo, I love these simplifed arrangements of the great classics. Thanks for posting the score too. BTW, the sound and video are much better on the second go 'round.

Larry, nice composition, it reminded me of something - perhaps Pachelbel's Cannon? Good steady strumming with your left hand, that is not always easy to keep up.
